Rules of Engagement: Addressing the Needs of Service Members,
Veterans, and Their Families

Developing Core Competencies for Behavioral Health Professionals

The PFR/ATTC Network ALI Team wrote this core competency report for those who are community based and involved in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders and mental health problems. Although service members, veterans and their families (SMVF) have a special culture of their own, the ALI team wanted to highlight that they reside in our communities and thus, need services at the community level. To provide effective services to this population, providers need to be informed and prepared to employ culturally competent services.
