Mentor FAQ's

  1. What is the ATTC Leadership Institute?
    The Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) Leadership Institute is a leadership preparation program providing a combination of in-depth assessments, traditional training seminars, distance eduction and field experience.

  2. What is the time committment involved?
    This is a six-month program involving a four phase design which builds a foundation in key competency areas, such as management, communication skills and emotional intelligence. A detailed description of the 4 phases can be found in the Candidate Application Packet.

  3. Why Mentor for the ATTC Leadership Institute?
    Mentoring is an important workforce development stategy for the addictions field. With many leaders reaching retirement age coupled with the increasing demand for addictions professionals in the future, it is important to pass on the knowledge and skills to the next generation of leaders. The ATTC Leadership Institute offers an extraordinary opportunity to guide and support our future leaders.

  4. What are the Leadership Institute requirements?
    A detailed list of emerging leader requirements can be found in the Candidate Application Packet on pages 5-6.

    How do I qualify for participation in the ATTC Leadership Institute as a mentor?
    To qualify, a candidate or nominated participant must invite you to mentor him/her. In addition, all mentors must meet the selection guidelines outlined on pages 6-7 of the Candidate Application Packet.

  5. Who will be selected to participate in the ATTC Leadership Institute?
    Fourteen (14) emerging leaders will be selected to participate from across the HBCU system. These individuals will also be asked to identify and partner with a mentor who is willing to serve as a guide and coach throughout this six-month process.

  6. How much does ATTC Leadership Institute cost?
    Travel, hotel and meals for both the emerging leaders and mentors are provided by the ATTC National Office as part of the ATTC Leadership Institute.

  7. What events am I required to attend?
    ATTC Leadership Institute Mentors are required to attend 3 events:
    * The Immersion Training - As an ATTC Leadership Institute mentor, you are required to attend the afternoon of Day 3, Day 4, and Day 5 of the Immersion Training. (August 5-7, 2009 at the Harbortowne Golf Resort and Convention Center in St. Michaels, MD.)
    * The Booster Training (November, 2009)
    * The ATTC Leadership Institute Graduation (February, 2010)

  8. When is the application deadline for candidates?
    NEW! The deadline for submitting the complete candidate application is May 13, 2009. (Dealine has been extended from April 15 to May 13, 2009)

  9. When is the application deadline for mentors?
    The deadline for submitting the completed mentor application is June 1, 2009. However, candidates who have identified their mentor prior to the application deadline, may also submit their completed mentor application form.

  10. What events am I required to attend?
    Once accepted into the program, ATTC Leadership Institute candidates must choose a mentor and submit the Mentor Application Form by June 1, 2009.
