Alcohol Awareness Month
April was first designated as Alcohol Awareness Month in 1987 to increase public awareness about the prevention and treatment of excessive alcohol use–which continues to kill more than 140,000 Americans every year.
In addition, alcohol misuse increased dramatically during the pandemic, often co-occurring with opioid use disorder. Between 2019 and 2020, opioid overdose deaths that involved alcohol increased by 40.8%. That percentage rose to 59.2% for overdose deaths specifically related to synthetic opioids other than methadone.
The Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC and our partners across the Network offer a wide range of products to promote alcohol awareness. Selected resources include:
- The Alcohol is Still a Drug webinar series presented by the Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC in 2021–2022 featured monthly 30-minute presentations on alcohol use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery.
- All session recordings and related materials are available for easy access in the Alcohol is Still a Drug Flip Book.
Northwest PTTC
- Alcohol Awareness Toolkit #Proof is in the Numbers, is designed to raise awareness about alcohol-related harms and the importance of alcohol policy safeguards.
