A key component of peer-based recovery support services is the disclosure of common experiences in both addiction and recovery. Finding a balance of what to disclose and when can serve to strengthen or weaken the professional relationship. In this workshop, participants will explore the art of skillful self-disclosure and learn useful guidelines for supporting peers recovery coaches in the process.
During Navigating Self-Disclosure Kris and Laura will talk about how to combine self disclosure with tools for motivational interviewing. This presentation is designed for peer recovery specialists, clinical staff work alongside them, and anyone who is interested in peer recovery!
About the presenters
Kris Kelly is the Minnesota State Project Manager for the Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC and subject matter expert on peer-based recovery support services. Kris joined the Great Lakes ATTC after working as the Co-Executive Director of a Minnesota-based recovery community organization and facilitator of the Recovery Coach Academy. Kris is also an expert-level pie baker. Her advanced culinary skills developed as Kris often baked pies as part of her own recovery process.
Laura Saunders, MSSW, has been using and guiding others in the practice of Motivational Interviewing for over two decades. As the Wisconsin State Manager for the Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC, she continues to have the pleasure of sharing this evidence-based practice across a range of professions, including in schools, hospitals, corrections facilities, and other care communities. Laura and her family are all born and bred Madisonians – Go Badgers!
