New Webinar Series: Alcohol is STILL a Drug: An Exploratory Series

Publication Date: Aug 30, 2021

Each year in September, National Recovery Month celebrates the tens of millions of Americans who have recovered from a substance use or mental health disorder.  With the theme Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community, National Recovery Month 2021 reminds us that recovery has a ripple effect, improving quality of life for all.

In honor of National Recovery Month 2021, the Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC are excited to launch Alcohol is STILL a Drug: An Exploratory Webinar Series. While the pandemic, the opioid overdose crisis, and increase in stimulants such as methamphetamine dominate the news, alcohol misuse remains a tenacious public health issue. The social isolation and stress of the COVID-19 era have changed drinking patterns: In the February 2021 Stress in America™ survey conducted by the APA, nearly one in four adults surveyed reported drinking more than before the pandemic. Alcohol sales soared with relaxed rules that allowed home delivery—and increased consumption. (See the Great Lakes PTTC product: Policy Implications of COVID-19 on Alcohol and Marijuana Use.) The stress of the pandemic overshadow the reality that alcohol is still the third-leading cause of death in the United States.

Now more than ever, it’s important to stress that treatment works and people do recover from alcohol use disorder. Each 30-minute episode of The Alcohol is STILL a Drug series will feature a different expert presenter on a topic related to alcohol misuse. The series will also share information on effective treatment and the reality of recovery.  Episodes air at 10am Central the first Tuesday of each month, September 2021–August 2022 (excluding January and July).

Please join us for the premiere episode on Tuesday, September 7, 10:00am Central. Featured speaker and peer recovery expert Kris Kelly, Project Manager with the Peer Recovery Center of Excellence, will share her experience as a woman in long-term recovery from substance use disorder.  Click here to register

Best wishes for National Recovery Month 2021 from all the staff of the Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC
