CDC Report on Outbreak of Lung Injury Associated with E-Cigarette Use, or Vaping

Published:
October 24, 2019

On October 17, 2019 the Center for Disease Control (CDC) published an update on the number of lung injuries and death associated with e-cigarettes or vaping products. Stated in the article, "as of October 15, 2019, 1,479  lung injury cases associated with the use of e-cigarette, or vaping, products have been reported to CDC from 49 states (all except Alaska), the District of Columbia, and 1 U.S. territory." In addition, 33 deaths have been confirmed in 24 states with all patients reporting a history of using these type of products. The Mountain Plains ATTC region (HHS Region 8) has had confirmed deaths in two of our states, Montana and Utah. Currently the CDC is reporting additional deaths and the states have not been identified at this time. As a Mountain Plains stakeholder or provider, we encourage everyone to review the CDC's updates on the following topics:

  1. what we don't know;
  2. CDC recommendation;
  3. Key facts about e-cigarette and vaping;
  4. latest outbreak information; and
  5. how the CDC is responding.

In addition, the CDC will update the latest outbreak information every Thursday, according to the article. Please visit https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/severe-lung-disease.html to read the full article.
