ATTC trainer, Timothy J. Legg, PhD, PsyD, MPA, MSN, PMHNP, MAC has published an article in the Fall 2020 publication Advances in Addiction and Recovery.  The article, “Integrating Psychodynamic Principles in Addiction Counseling: An Idea Whose Time Has Come, Again” suggests that addiction counselors consider adding a “new” but also well known, old tool to their treatment techniques because there is some evidence to show that not everyone is benefiting from the current heavy emphasis on CBT or manualized treatment modalities. He recognizes that not everyone will have the time to become experts in psychoanalysis, they can utilize some of the psychodynamic approach, ie listening to the client, emphasizing, asking questions to clarify what they mean, observing patterns in behavior and advocating as necessary with their insurance company.
