Coping Tips for Traumatic Events and Disasters - Last Updated 5/19/2019

Emotional distress can happen before and after a disaster. Coping strategies include preparation, self-care, and identifying support systems. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has compiled a list of resources to find healthy ways to cope when these events happen, including: How to take care of yourself and loved ones; General disaster response and recovery information; Incidence of mass violence: Specific information; Resources for disaster responders; Traumatic stress and re-traumatization resources; National Child Traumatic Stress Network Resources (NCTSN); and how to ask for help.
