This webinar will discuss how historically menthol products have been predatorily marketed to marginalized groups and most conspicuously to African Americans. The results of predatory marketing has led to 85% of adults and 94% of teen African American smokers to smoke menthol cigarettes. Black folks die disproportionately from tobacco-related diseases compared to other races and ethnic groups. Menthol isn't deadly itself, but it allows the poison to go down easier.

Informed by the Region 8 Needs Assessment three priority areas have been used to inform Year 1 training and technical assistance events to date. For example, Enhanced Professional Learning Series (EPLS) on SBIRT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Skill-based Videoconferencing (SbVC), and Technology-Based Clinical Supervision (TBCS) have been conducted throughout the Region. This report is a Year 1 Summary of Mountain Plains events used to inform our Advisory Board members of key events that occurred.

This presentation discusses strategies to identify South Africa HIV ATTC training and technical assistance offerings that meet stakeholder needs, particularly with mental health and substance use topics. We particularly focus on the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training model.

This manuscript describes a pilot study of the mental health training manual used by the South Africa HIV ATTC. Results indicated that community health workers demonstrated significantly improved knowledge, confidence, attitudes, and tolerance to rehabilitation of the mentally ill in the community. The manuscript was written by Dr. Goodman Sibeko, the South Africa HIV ATTC Co-Director, and Professor Dan Stein, the Project Director, and published June 2018 in BMC Psychiatry.

In this webinar, Joe Glass, PhD, MSW, of Kaiser Permanente WA Health Research Institute, examined the stigma of substance use disorders. Dr. Glass reviewed the scientific evidence about how stigma shapes healthcare experiences and treatment seeking, and discussed practical issues such as why and how to avoid using stigmatizing language.

The purpose of this introductory training is to provide HIV clinicians with a detailed overview of the neurobiology of addiction, the impact of HIV on the brain and central nervous system (CNS), and the detrimental impact of the intersectionality of multiple stigmatized identities. This webinar provides an overview of the Substance Use Disorders Initiative, a program developed at Massachusetts General Hospital to improve the quality, clinical outcomes, and value of addiction treatment by implementing a chronic disease model of care across the system. In this webinar, Dr. Dennis Donovan, PhD, of the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute, University of Washington, describes the Healing of the Canoe (HOC) project, a collaborative between the Suquamish Tribe, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe (PGST), and the University of Washington Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute (ADAI) to plan, implement, and evaluate culturally grounded interventions to reduce health disparities and promote health with both Native American tribes.
