Event
Stigma is a major obstacle preventing millions of people who are struggling with substance use from entering treatment. This course provides psychoeducation for professionals in terms of medication assisted treatment options and demystifying traditional recovery culture which sometimes creates covert barriers within the recovery community. It is designed to help professionals break the stigma that creates an unnecessary barrier to treatment by understanding recovery oriented language and strategies that can be integrated into practice immediately. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: •Identify/use strengths-based language to reduce stigma associated with SUDs; •Conceptualize factors that influence stigma associated with SUDs and their consequences; •Discuss targets/interventions aimed at addressing stigma associated with substance use; and •Articulate the difference between medication assisted treatment options and provide consultation to persons in recovery.

The New England ATTC, in partnership with AdCare Educational Institute of New England is hosting this plenary session at the Virtual New England Summer School on 6/8/21 from 9:00 to 10:15.  This presentation will offer an update on the opioid crises and overdose prevention and response efforts. The impact of the COVID pandemic will be addressed, and additional current and emerging trends such as fentanyl, stimulants, and new promising overdose prevention and response strategies will be discussed.

Holly Hagle, Ph.D. and Nicole Augustine, MPH, MCHES, CPS facilitated the listening session. 499 people attended the online webinar and contributed through chat and their phone/computer microphone. For privacy, this session was not recorded, but four people analyzed the notes to outline themes and key issues for each community, plus strategies and resources that could be shared after the event. All notes shared are deidentified except for noting the community identity, which is relevant to framing issues.

Section 2: Implementing Contingency Management: Lessons Learned from VA’s National Implementation Initiative. Dominick DePhilippis, Ph.D., presents on use of contingency management in the VA system. Section 3: Using the MATRIX Model to treat stimulant disorders in a FQHC setting. Regina Fox, LSW, CSAC, will discuss use of the Matrix Model of treatment in a community-based treatment organization.
