In the United States the percentage of women involved in the criminal justice system is no match for men in the same system. There is a growing understanding that women’s issues are often overlooked because the numbers outweigh that of men. How does the cycle of substance abuse contribute to the female offender becoming incarcerated? What are some of the reentry options available? Reentry planning involves the use of programs targeted at promoting the effective reintegration of offenders back into communities upon release from prison and jail. The female offender released from prison with a history of substance abuse faces serious needs as they re-enter the community. Finding support for this adjustment and avoiding relapse are two of many obstacles that many women face. The reality is that many female offenders with a history of addiction, released from prison remains subject to community correctional authority and must adapt to the challenges of mandated treatment and programs. During this course, the participant will explore practices that are effective, and evidence based in providing ongoing support and reinforcement to the female offenders re- entering society. In addition, we will explore gender responsive strategies targeting women offenders who are involved in the criminal justice system.
