Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

 


COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to train students in the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI), a non-judgmental counseling style that evokes motivation to change.  Using powerpoint, videos and demonstrations, the trainer will guide participants in learning the core skills of MI. All participants will have an opportunity to practice MI skills with the support of the trainer, using “role-play”, “real play” and an experiential approach.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the unique aspects of Motivational Interviewing
  • Identify MI history, research and guidelines.
  • Use the core skills (OARS), MI Spirit & Develop Change Talk 

 


PRESENTER:

Christine Higgins, M.A  attended MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) a national training organization in 2005, and she has trained professionals in this technique ever since.  Practitioners serving Special populations that she has helped to train nationwide include:  Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselors, Nutritionists, Alternative School Counselors, Supported Employment Specialists, Health Care Professionals, Nurses (caring for chronic disease) and more. She is also experienced with setting up incentive programs designed to motivate people to increase productivity, abstain from alcohol and other substances, and in the case of people living with mental illness to create helpful, healthy behaviors.
