Evidence-Based Practices in Working with the Criminal Justice Client - Session at the New England School of Addiction and Prevention Studies Summer School

The New England ATTC, in partnership with AdCare Educational Institute of New England is hosting this session at the New England Summer School on 6/10/24 from 2:00pm - 5:15pm with subject matter expert Brenda Westberry. Many justifications have been made to address the issues and rise in the current prison population and the mass incarceration of offenders in the United States. The “Lock em up” approach to crime provides very little evidence that prisons reduce recidivism and makes society less safe. Incapacitation and the use of custodial sanctions can also produce unanticipated criminogenic effects. In using outcome focused approaches and interventions that are proven to be effective, criminal justice decision making can better address the needs of the offender, change the impact of policies, programs and daily practices with justice involved clients. Evidenced Based Practices and procedures embraces the use of all available tools, practices and programs that improve or ameliorate the social or clinical problems of offenders including individuals with substance use disorders. In this course, risk assessments, case planning, cognitive behavioral programming, motivational interviewing and other intervention models that are proven to lead to good outcomes and the reduction of recidivism will be explored.
