Clinical research and practice have been increasingly incorporating mobile and other technologies into the design and execution of studies and the implementation of interventions post-protocol. At the same time, individuals and corporations/organizations are relying more and more on electronic platforms in many facets of their daily lives. There is a range of benefits and challenges to the use of technology in clinical settings, but challenges can be overcome with careful planning, useful partnerships, and forethought. This free seminar series from the NIDA Clinical Trials Network highlights leaders in their fields discussing topics of direct relevance to the application of mobile technologies to clinical care and research.

Topics presented on so far have included:

  • substance abuse research with mobile technology,
  • applying new technology to substance use disorders,
  • mining “Big Healthcare” data,
  • security and privacy concerns related to the use of mobile medical applications,
  • micro-randomized designs for research using mHealth tech, and
  • the development and implementation of a community-based medication assisted recovery program using modern telehealth technologies.

The series has been on temporary hiatus, but will be restarting with new presentations in 2017.
