This new study in the NIDA Clinical Trials Network will evaluate the effectiveness of primary prevention of cannabis use among 12-17 year olds, comparing to treatment-as-usual a computerized screening, risk assessment, and substance use education intervention followed by physician brief advice.
The computerized intervention is being adapted from the cSBA, a computer-facilitated screening and provider brief advice system for primary care physicians who work with adolescents. In a study published in 2012 in Pediatrics, the cSBA was found to be “promising” for reducing substance use among adolescent primary care patients (find article free online at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3362902/).
The project’s principal investigator, Robert Schwartz, MD, is located at the Friends Research Institute in Maryland, with co-lead investigators at the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Duke University Medical Center.
