Meet the South Africa HIV ATTC Team

Goodman Sibeko

Co-Director

Goodman Sibeko, PhD has a medical degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a doctorate from University of Cape Town. He specialises in peer-run interventions for caregivers and non-specialist workers in the management of severe mental illness. As Co-Director of the South Africa HIV ATTC, he oversees all day-to-day operations and leads liaison activities with local and international stakeholders and partners. He leads training and technical assistance activities related to substance use, HIV, and mental health. Dr. Sibeko is the author of "Mental Health Training for Community Health Workers" which is used by the South Africa HIV ATTC as a core curriculum to help organisations improve mental health care as a means of reducing HIV risk and improving HIV treatment outcomes. 

 

 

Dan Stein

Co-Project Director

Dan Stein is Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town and UCT-Affiliated Hospitals. He is also Director of the South African Medical Research Council Unit on Risk and Resilience in Mental Disorders, and a National Research Foundation A-rated scientist.

 

 

Sara Becker

Co-Project Director

Sara Becker, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the Brown University School of Public Health and in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Brown University Medical School. She directs a research portfolio focused on increasing the utilization of effective addiction treatment for adolescents and adults. As Co-Project Director of the South Africa HIV ATTC, she serves as the primary point of contact for SAMHSA and PEPFAR funding agencies to ensure compliance with federal priorities and reporting requirements. Dr. Becker is also the Project Director of a U.S.-based Regional ATTC.

 

 

Caroline Kuo

Co-Project Director

Caroline Kuo, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioural and Social Sciences at the Brown University School of Public Health and in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town Medical School. Her research portfolio includes work with orphaned children and families; women and girls; incarcerated populations; sexual minority populations; and sex workers in South Africa, Kenya, Mexico, and the United States. As Co-Project Director of the South Africa HIV ATTC, Dr. Kuo coordinates ATTC activities and provides administrative and fiscal oversight as well as advises on training and technical assistance related to HIV care.

 

 

Rehana Kader

Curriculum Developer

Rehana Kader is a clinical psychologist practicing at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital and Rondebosch Medical Centre in Cape Town. She works with a wide range of clinical disorders including the treatment of Substance Use Disorders. She is an Internationally Certified Addiction Professional and a Global Master Trainer for Colombo Plan in substance use prevention and treatment of adults and children.

 

 

Tara Carney

Master Trainer

Tara Carney, PhD is employed as a specialist scientist at the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council, and is an honorary lecturer at the University of Cape Town. Her work has focused on HIV prevention, gender-based violence, adolescents with substance use and other risk behaviours, and evidence-based screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment models. She serves as a Master Trainer and also works on adapting the training curriculum for the South Africa HIV ATTC.

 

 

Shaheema Allie

Training and Curriculum Coordinator: Substance Use Disorders

 Shaheema Allie is a Registered Counselor with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). She has experience working with patients with substance use disorders and other mental health issues. She is a lecturer on Motivational Interviewing and the Screening and Assesment of Substance Use Disorders as part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Addictions Care at University of Cape Town. As Training and Curriculum Coordinator for the South Africa HIV ATTC, Shaheema assesses training needs and leads the data collection for regional needs assessments, and assists in the development of locally-adapted training protocols on substance use disorders.

 

 

Mildrett Stevens

Outreach and Liaison Coordinator

Mildress Stevens is a Registered Social Worker, specialising in substance use, mental health, and gender-based violence. As Outreach and Liaison Coodinator for the South Africa HIV ATTC, she works with stakeholders to establish and build relationships and facilitates ongoing contact between the ATTC and our organisational partners.

 

 

Fergus Ashburner

Senior Trainer

Fergus Ashburner is a senior trainer in Motivational interviewing and Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to treatment (SBIRT). He is also the course convenor of the Post Graduate Diploma in Addictions Care at the University of Cape Town. Fergus is a clinical psychologist by training.

 

 

Nurain Tisaker

Programme Manager

Nurain Tisaker is Clinical Psychologist who initially trained as a Clinical Social Worker at the University of Cape Town. She has worked in in-patient psychiatric, substance use and eating disorder treatment centres over the past 13 years and currently runs a small private practice servicing general mental health concerns including substance use disorders in Cape Town. As the Programme Manager for South Africa HIV ATTC Nurain oversees training related activities and plays a role in developing and refining curricula. She is also actively involved in the ATTC’s Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of activities, including participation in planning, execution and evaluation of the M&E protocols.

 

 

Bronwyn Myers

Expert Technical Assistance Advisor

Bronwyn Myers is a Chief Specialist Scientist in the South African Medical Research Council's Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit and a Professor in Addiction Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health, University of Cape Town. Her work over the last 15 years has focused on improving access to and the quality of services for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental and physical health problems among vulnerable populations.

 

 

Katherine Sorsdahl

Expert Curriculum Development Advisor

Katherine Sorsdahl is a Professor and the Co-Director of the Alan J Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health at the University of Cape Town. For more than a decade her work has focused on improving access to and the quality of care for people living with mental disorders, developing and adapting evidence-based mental health interventions for the South African context, and integrating evidence-based mental health services into health systems with a focus on task sharing.

 

 

Banele Mtsotso

Administrative Assistant

Banele Mtsotso serves as the Administrative Assistant for the South Africa HIV ATTC. He joins us after serving for two and a half years as an administrative assistant at Lentegeur Hospital in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. Banele oversees all ATTC scheduling, financial processing, travel, and accomodations.

 

 

Morayo Akande

Project Coordinator

Morayo Akande, MPH is a public health specialist with a focus in behavioural health. Her research portfolio includes work with people affected by HIV, homelessness, smoking and substance use disorders in South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and the United States. As Project Coordinator for the South Africa HIV ATTC, Morayo leads the development and implementation of standard operating procedures in close consultation with the Co-Director, oversees the execution of distance learning activities, and ensure data collection and evaluation activities are in compliance with SAMHSA and PEPFAR requirements.
