Depression is the second most frequently found symptom coexisting with alcohol and/or drug misuse, abuse and dependence. Modern research has established the link between early recovery and depressive symptoms. Further it has established that depressive symptoms in early recovery constitute the leading internal cause of craving and relapse. No doubt treatment of this
population has been seen as more difficult and problematic leading to clients "falling through the cracks” and not receiving the care they needed for either or both conditions. This workshop looks at issues of which came first, prevalence, alcohol and drug induced depression, and demonstrably effective treatment. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
•Demonstrate causal relationship between chemical dependence and depression and depression and chemical dependency;
•Demonstrate and initiate techniques effective for both depressive symptoms and chemical dependency; and
•Effectively identify/use 3 depression screening instruments.
