Behavioral addictions are largely overlooked in the diagnosis and treatment of alcohol/substance-based addictions, yet may account for much of the vulnerability to relapse in the latter. This course gives a comprehensive definition of addiction, derived directly from the arenas of alcoholism and drug addiction, that specify diagnostic criteria establishing the link between substance-based addictions and behavioral addictions.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
•Learn how/when various behaviors and indulgences meet the criteria for addiction by considering the common denominators which exist between all substance-based addictions and all non-substance-based addictions;
•Learn how behavioral addictions and substance-based addictions often interweave;
•Learn how behavioral addictions often form a part of the relapse pattern in substance-based addictions;
•Become familiar with lines of triage approach;
•Engage in dialogue regarding the current state of the addictions treatment field.
