US Virgin Islands on hurricane-related trauma recovery using a story narrative format - USVI

Hurricanes Irma and Maria both hit the USVIs in September 2017 as rare Category 5 storms. The impact on children and families is multifaceted and will depend on various factors. The severity of exposure, evacuation from home, relocation, loss of personal belonging or close relatives and changes in routine may all result in trauma. Children's functioning and recovery will be influenced by how their parents and caregivers cope during and after the hurricane. To meet this need, we have the intend to train counselors, educators, and behavioral service providers in the US Virgin Islands on hurricane-related trauma recovery using a story narrative format. The purpose of using a story narrative is to provide the adults with a tool for sharing emotions and experiences related to the event in a safe environment. The story being used was developed after Hurricane Katrina and has been used in other countries to help children and families in the aftermath of hurricanes.
