Bernice Varela, LCSW

Bernice Varela, LCSWI grew up in a traditional Mexican American family in Northern New Mexico. The town that I grew up in consisted of poor and mentally ill with the college and the Behavioral Health Hospital being the main sources of revenue for the town. Seeing someone yelling on the street corner was never anything that was out of the norm. People took care of the mentally Ill and homeless and it was not stigmatized the way it is now. The acute clients were known by name and treated with dignity by everyone. It was so normal to me that when I moved out of the small town and saw how others treated the mentally ill and homeless, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was never expected to graduate High School, much less make it to University and graduate with honors. I started University with the intent to work in the Criminal Justice system and potentially move on to become a lawyer. After getting an AA, I switched my major, falling in love with psychology. I became a Social Worker because I wanted to be in the front lines. I got my BA in Social Work and went on to get an advanced Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work. I went back to University later and got certified in Forensic Psychology. Currently I am the Executive Director of a non profit serving women coming out of incarceration as well as women in the community, giving them the support they deserve to make lasting changes.
