SBIRT is considered an evidence-based practice that uses a preventive public health approach to identify and intervene with persons whose pattern of use puts them at risk for, or are experiencing substance-related health problems, and facilitate referrals to specialty care for persons with a high potential for substance use disorders. Many people who do not meet the criteria of an alcohol or substance use disorder are potentially impacting their health and wellness. SBIRT addresses a person’s risky behavior and as a practice model, can be integrated into health care and behavioral health settings. This course will review validated instruments to screen for substance use, how to provide a brief intervention, essential components of successful facilitation of referrals to specialized care, and billing criteria for qualified professionals. Participant Criteria: This SBIRT 4-hour course met NYS OASAS training requirement for Qualified Health Professionals (i.e., Licensed Social Workers, occupational therapists, physicians, PAs, RNs, licensed psychologists, certified rehabilitation counselors, therapeutic recreation specialists, licensed marriage and family therapists, and licensed mental health counselors), who intend to bill for SBIRT services in their settings. This training was approved for 4 renewal hours (CASAC, CPP, CPS) and 4 initial hours (CPP, CPS) through New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS). As an IC & RC member board, OASAS accredited courses are were reciprocal approval by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, Alcohol and Drug Counselor Committee. Many other states offered reciprocity.

Stigma of substance use can impede appropriate and preventive care that is critical for older adults and their wellness. Biased perceptions of substance use can often dismiss health related impacts of substance use and impede prevention efforts with the aging community. The webinar will explore how stigma of substance use with older adults underscores the lack of screening and tailored prevention. Content will further inform and educate on age-related challenges that increase substance misuse, medication adherence, and person-centered brief intervention approaches. This training was approved for two renewal hours (CASAC, CPP, CPS) and two initial hours (CPP, CPS) through New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS). About this series: The Great Lakes ATTC and MHTTC are excited to offer these introductory training videos on the use of SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment). This series includes three simulated patient recordings with each portraying a realistic scenario focusing on one part of the SBIRT screening process (brief intervention, initiating brief treatment, referral to treatment).   The Great Lakes ATTC and MHTTC also offer live virtual trainings on SBIRT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). These trainings take place on a recurring basis throughout the year, and they are perfect for those who are new to MI and SBIRT, as well as practitioners who are interested in refreshing their knowledge and skills in an interactive virtual learning environment. Culturally and linguistically appropriate strategies are the means to ensure respectful and responsive services that enhance effective outcomes for racial, ethnic, and other underserved communities in behavioral health care. As such, being culturally informed when conducting evidence based (EB) practices such as Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment, (SBIRT) can help Hispanic and Latinx clients reduce their substance use. SBIRT, is an evidence-based practice that helps practitioners identify and intervene with people whose pattern of substance use puts them at risk for or are experiencing substance-related health and other psychosocial problems. The question is: How do we facilitate SBIRT without compromising the fidelity of the model while practicing culturally responsive care? This two session webinar series will review current landscape of substance use and benefits of culturally adapted evidence-based interventions that align with culturally and appropriate services standards, (CLAS). Further, the content will inform on how a culturally informed framework can help meet the needs and enhance quality care among Hispanic communities at risk. Goal: Clinical and non-clinical professionals will review the dynamics of facilitating a culturally responsive SBIRT intervention for reducing substance use with Latinx communities and enhance their recovery and wellness process. SBIRT for Health and Behavioral Health Professionals: How to Talk to Patients about Substance Use is a 3 hour, self-paced course for health, oral health, and behavioral health students and professionals. Learners will watch video demonstrations of brief interventions performed by other clinicians and even practice themselves with a patient through a situational branching exercise. Participants will apply and test their knowledge through quizzes following each module. Maryland Reproductive Health Virtual Series: Implementing SBIRT: Family Planning and Reproductive Health Settings Description: The 2020 Maryland Reproductive Health Roundtable Virtual Series was a statewide, multiple sessions series spanning across three months to share education and information around reproductive health and family planning in the state of Maryland. These sessions invited public health professionals and clinical providers from city, county, and state agencies as well as health care institutions, community-based organizations, and academic partners. The topics addressed were based on priority challenges and opportunities in reproductive health care. Recordings of the sessions are below as well as corresponding resources. The 2020 Maryland Reproductive Health Roundtable Virtual Series was hosted by B’more for Healthy Babies, UChoose, Maryland Department of Health, and Morgan State University. Speakers: Holly Ireland, LCSW-C Holly is the Co-Project Director of the Central East ATTC. She has 30 years’ experience working in the behavioral health field, beginning her career as a Residential Rehabilitation Counselor while working on her undergraduate degree in psychology at Towson University. During her career, she has provided direct service in outpatient behavioral health and recovery support settings, including individual, group and family therapy for co-occurring disorders, crisis intervention, trauma treatment, Assertive Community Treatment, and advocacy. Holly also serves as adjunct faculty for Salisbury University’s Social Work Department, teaching social welfare policy and advanced practice courses.   Shelley Miller, MS Shelley Miller has worked in family planning and reproductive health for more than 35 years. She has served in a variety of roles including Director of Patient Services for a large Title X agency and Director of Training Performance Improvement for TRAINING 3, a regional training center. Shelley has provided consultation, coaching, training and technical assistance, both nationally and internationally. She currently works with the Central East ATTC as an independent consultant in its SBIRT implementation project with Title X.

Description: This 5-hour virtual conference focused on the integration efforts that support a collaborative healthcare approach. Professionals working in these areas were able to increase their knowledge of new updates in an interprofessional environment. These clinical updates are designed to assist in creating comprehensive screening protocols in primary care, substance use treatment, and infectious disease and sexual health clinics. This training is a collaboration between the Mid-Atlantic Education and Training Center, The Danya Institute, the Central East TTCs (ATTC, MHTTC, PTTC), and the STD/HIV Prevention Training Center at Johns Hopkins.

This guide provides resources specific to screening for co-occurring disorders experienced by farmers, farmworkers and farm families in rural communities. Healthcare providers, behavioral health professionals, and social workers are facing increasing pressure to respond to a host of unmet substance use and mental health needs of rural communities. In response, with support from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Mountain Plains ATTC and the Mountain Plains MHTTC have collaborated to release a resource guide to assist rural healthcare providers with screening and assessment of alcohol use disorder and depression.  The guide uses a case scenario to illustrate the most common barriers encountered in identifying co-occurring disorders and underscores the unique needs of rural communities that are home to agricultural producers.   If you would like to request a hardcopy version of this product please contact Susan Mickelson   Following the release of a new product (Depression, Alcohol and Farm Stress: Addressing Co-Occurring Disorders in Rural America) by authors at the Mountain Plains Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC) and the Mountain Plains Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC). MHTTC and ATTC team members from two regions contacted key stakeholders in May 2020 to assess the impact of the farm crisis and perceptions regarding next steps. Feedback from these providers and key stakeholders is included in this brief along with updated data related to farm stress and mental health implications. These interviews and data will guide future activity for both the Mountain Plains and Mid-America ATTCs and MHTTCs. In partnership with an NIAAA funded project awarded to researchers at Rhode Island Hospital, we developed an intensive TA curriculum to promote the implementation of screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment into pediatric trauma centers. The curriculum includes an online orientation video, three self-paced webinars, self-paced submission of role plays with standardized case vignettes, and monthly coaching calls. Materials are currently being actively piloted and will be available in the ATTC Network once finalized.

This webinar, presented by Ken C. Winters, PhD, provided an overview of the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model for use with adolescents who may be using substances. In addition to a look at the parts of the SBIRT model, Dr. Winters also discussed techniques for maximizing the quality of a teen's self-report, provided an overview of the components of several recommended brief interventions, and provided links to evidence-based tools and resources. Ken C. Winters, PhD is a Senior Scientist at the Oregon Research Institute (MN affiliate) and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Psychology, University of Minnesota. His primary research interests are the assessment and treatment of adolescent drug abuse. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Abuse, and the Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. Dr. Winters received numerous research grants from the National Institute of Health and various foundations and published over 125 articles over a 30-year period.
