This annotated bibliography is a collection of resources related to racism, anti-racism and advancing health equity for Black, Indigenous and other People of Color and other marginalized communities affected by unhealthy substance use and SUD/SUD treatment using a DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) framework. It includes recent and classic/landmark papers on racism and SUD/SUD treatment, anti-racist strategies and approaches, advancement of health equity, issues relevant to particular racial groupings, and issues related to various disciplines/roles in healthcare (medical, nursing, social work, etc.). It also includes resources related to health disparities, SDOH, and DEI in the provision of substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery. This project is a collaboration between AMERSA, the Prevention Technology Transfer Center Network Coordinating Office (PTTC NCO), and the Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network Coordinating Office (ATTC NCO).

The South Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center (SSW ATTC) collaborates with Faith Partners, Inc. a non-profit 501©3, which was founded in 1995 by religious leaders seeking ways to mobilize faith communities’ resources to address alcohol and drug issues in their communities. Faith Partners provides the leadership, training, educational materials and consultation to initiate, develop and sustain a faith communities’ efforts to address drugs and alcohol and its impact on their members. Faith Partners provides an individualized plan to start an effective team effort to address the needs of the whole faith community. As part of the process of building capacity and identifying the unique needs and goals of each faith community around the development of their ministry, Faith Partners utilizes community surveys at several points in time. Following is a practical guide developed by the South Southwest ATTC with best practices for engaging the entire faith community in the survey process.

The Mountain Plains ATTC has created a new Health-e-Knowledge course, Older Adults and Substance Use, this course provides an overview of aging and the issues associated with the use of substance by older adults. It highlights some of the contributing factors to this increase of substance use in older adults and provides some initial approaches that can assist primary care and behavioral health providers in assessing the use of substances and possible interventions. Also, modifications that may need to be considered when assessing and intervening with older adults around substance use is provided. Course can be found on the Health-e-Knowledge Website.

The Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC have created an online flipbook for the Alcohol is STILL a Drug series. Alcohol is STILL a Drug is comprised of ten 30-minute videos recorded between September 2021–August 2022. Each video addresses the impacts of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and is presented by a leading professional in that field.    You can view the flipbook online or you can download a PDF version. The videos and supplemental resources are accessible in either format.      ABOUT THE SERIES: The opioid crisis, increasing stimulant misuse, and marijuana legalization often dominate the news—yet alcohol remains the number one substance negatively impacting physical health, mental health, social engagement, and financial stability for individuals throughout the US.   While this series will focus on the hopefulness of recovery from AUD, it will also take a deep dive into what we know about the full impact of alcohol overuse and the ways it affects everyone, even those who do not personally misuse alcohol.   The Alcohol Is Still a Drug series offers viewers the following learning objectives: Summarize the current impacts of problematic alcohol use in various/special populations, including pregnant women, youth, rural, and minority populations Assess and prioritize alcohol reduction efforts in targeted settings Describe the current efforts to curb problematic alcohol use, including best practices in providing treatment Understand the importance of person-centered approaches to treatment and recovery

This 3-hour interactive online course, written and presented by Eric Ström, JD, PhD, LMHC, a licensed mental health counselor and attorney in Seattle, looks at laws and ethics related to clinician-client relationships for behavioral health professionals in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.  The course is intended to meet the current ethics requirement (as of product release in November 2021) among healthcare professionals in each of the four HHS Region 10 states: AK, ID, OR, and WA.     A little about the product:  The investigator, co-author Dawn Tyus, sought to learn about the realities, needs, strengths, and challenges of African American women in treatment and recovery. And she did it by asking women in long-term recovery about their own experiences and observations in treatment and early recovery, and about the wisdom they had earned through the years. Those interviews yielded a wealth of knowledge, experience, and ideas for treatment and recovery support. They will form the backbone of a collection of guidelines for treatment and peer-based recovery support for African American women, to be published this year (2020) by the Southeast Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Southeast ATTC) at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. A Tour of Motivational Interviewing: An Interprofessional Road Map for Behavior Change is a four-hour course in Motivational Interviewing (MI), a form of collaborative conversation for strengthening a person's own motivation and commitment to change, by eliciting and exploring the person's own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. This course takes the learner on a tour of the essential skills used to strengthen an individual’s motivation for behavior change. This online course was prepared by the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Nursing and Health Studies’ Mid-America Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Mid-America ATTC), under a cooperative agreement from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
