Episode 58: MI and the Māori Culture, with Tipene Pickett In this episode, Glenn and Sebastian talk to Tipene Pickett, a Māori MI provider whose focus is on the relationship between MI and indigenous knowledge and wisdom. Tipene talks about his introduction to MI; the experience of confrontation and learning what’s more helpful; discovering what’s within you and who you are; engagement, self-disclosure, and narratives of origin; confidence rulers; and how language can change our physiology.

Part 1: September 7, 2022 Presenters: Evan Burke (Idaho Harm Reduction Project) and Norma Jaeger (Recovery Idaho) In this session, Evan Burke offered a brief overview of the data on opioid overdose in Idaho and the response to it by government and community-based organizations. Burke also covered how to recognize and respond to an overdose and provide guidance about harm reduction informed practices.   Mid-America ATTC  (MATTC) partnered with the Ethnic Communities Opioid Response Network in Missouri, the Addiction Policy Forum, and the Opioid Response Network (ORN in IA, KS, MO, and NE) to translate Prevention of Opioid Use Education Materials into ten different languages and ensure they are culturally appropriate.

Ethics in a Rural Context: Principles & Decision-Making - Session One   The first session, ethical decision-making and boundary management will be emphasized, along with a review of ethical principles that guide the process across service providers.  

This presentation reviewed the philosophy of harm reduction as an intervention for substance use disorder and will examine the trajectory of harm reduction programming in Idaho since the legalization of syringe services in 2019.  A few learning objectives:  Be able to identify multiple forms of harm reduction as it pertains to a variety of potentially risky behaviors. Be able to reframe substance use from a harm reduction model. Be able to identify the benefits of a syringe service program and other harm reduction interventions to an individual and a community. Increase knowledge about the implementation and growth of harm reduction programs in Idaho. About the presenter: Marjorie Wilson, LMSW, MPH, is the Executive Director and co-founder of Idaho Harm Reduction Project (IHRP). IHRP is a drug user health program offering a syringe service program, naloxone distribution program, and HIV/HCV testing. Since 2019, IHRP has served the whole state through its mail-based services and has distributed supplies into all of Idaho's 44 counties. Download slides | Watch recording

Over the past four years, the staff and consultants responsible for providing training and technical assistance to Tribal Opioid Response grantees have been continually impressed and inspired by the determination, resilience, and creativity of TOR programs across the country. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the TOR grantees’ journey. As of Sept. 29, 2022, we will no longer be providing training or technical assistance to TOR grantees. The resource page we created will remain available to all on the National American Indian and Alaska Native Addiction Technology Transfer website, and we compiled this document of additional resources as a farewell gift to the TOR grantees we’ve worked with over the years. Thank you for the important work you’re doing in your communities, and thank you for allowing us to be a part of it.  

The Mountain Plains ATTC has created a new Health-e-Knowledge course, Older Adults and Substance Use, this course provides an overview of aging and the issues associated with the use of substance by older adults. It highlights some of the contributing factors to this increase of substance use in older adults and provides some initial approaches that can assist primary care and behavioral health providers in assessing the use of substances and possible interventions. Also, modifications that may need to be considered when assessing and intervening with older adults around substance use is provided. Course can be found on the Health-e-Knowledge Website.    

This webinar will highlight findings from SAMHSA’s guide titled, Adapting Interventions for Under-resourced Populations, which explores evidence-based, organization-level strategies and promising practices to adapt and evaluate evidence-based practices in culturally humble and effective ways. Following a presentation of the goals and framing of the guide by SAMHSA’s Mary Roary, PhD, Angela Weeks, DBA of The Center of Excellence on LGBTQ+ Behavioral Heath Equity and the guide’s technical expert panel will discuss its development. Rucha Londhe, PhD, Abt Associates, will describe the adaptation process and best practice strategies for cultural adaptation of evidence-based interventions. Representatives from organizations featured in the guide’s case studies will discuss how they have adapted interventions for specific populations. This 2.5 hour self-paced course provides an overview of Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) and discusses how MAT fits into the context of the larger substance use disorder treatment system. It includes information on the scale of the alcohol and opioid problem in the U.S. as well as how alcohol and opioids work in the body and brain. The overall purpose of this course is to enhance your professional knowledge of MAT and increase your confidence to engage and educate patients about MAT. 2.5 hours Continuing Education Available, NAADAC, NASW, CNE

The number of older adults in the United States is increasing and with the aging of baby boomers this increase is expected to continue. In addition, the aging baby boomers are changing the aging experience much like they have changed other life stages prior to their older adult years. This population cohort is also one that experimented with and continued to use substances to a degree beyond other previous generational cohorts. The result is that as they age, they are bringing substance use into the older adult years. This Healthy Knowledge course will provide an overview of aging in the United States, with a particular focus on the aging of baby boomers, and how healthcare professional can assess and intervene with older adults regarding their substance use as they present themselves for care and a range of services. 3.75 hours Continuing Education Available. This 1.5 hour course is designed to educate employers and employees about mental health and substance use issues that may arise in the workplace and how to manage them. It is not designed for the mental health professional, and this series does not train the viewer to diagnose, only to recognize and respond. Behavioral health and substance use are common occurrences. Everyone in the workplace can make an impact by learning more about these conditions, working to reduce stigma, and learning how to talk to a coworker who might be struggling and help them to access supportive resources. This presentation was prepared for the Mid-America Addiction Technology Center (Mid-America ATTC), Mid-America Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (Mid-America MHTTC), and the Mid-America Prevention Technology Transfer Center (Mid-America PTTC) under a cooperative agreement from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC), and the New England Association of Recovery Court Professionals (NEARCP), recently hosted a new webinar for criminal justice professionals. This program focused on the gender-based predictors of and patterns and pathways into substance misuse and the criminal justice system and addressed the specific treatment, trauma, relationship, familial responsibility, physical and mental health, and economic circumstances of women that must be appropriately addressed during drug court participation. The program concluded with the processes, personnel, and programs necessary to build a successful gender-specific specialized docket. Beginning on September 21, 2022, this monthly 3-session series will host a diverse panel of Native Americans to address both personal and collective barriers to living heathier. The panel will explore ways to navigate a linear colonial system, in a good way, while maintaining balance, and share teachings on helping both ourselves and the Native people.
