This training provides information about the use of Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorders in the criminal justice system.

This one-day workshop will provide a brief overview of the medical, psychological and behavioral aspects of opiate abuse/dependence. Agonist, partial agonist, antagonist and non-medication assisted therapy will be discussed and include:   a. Deciding factors between medication and non-medication assisted treatment b. Treatment protocols 

Safe prescribing - Access to naloxone to prevent overdose deaths - Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) - The use of medications and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders and prevent opioid overdose. slideDecks4U are PowerPoint slide decks intended to highlight a topic in 10 slides or less (similar to ‘pitch decks’ used in the business world to give a short summary of a company and its start-up vision). Unrestricted slide decks that include presenter notes and references are available. Additional learning resources (e.g., original research articles, case studies, and learning exercises) will also be included when possible.

J. Paul Seale, MD, Certified by the American Boards of Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine, discusses America’s ongoing opioid epidemic. By the end of this one hour program, participants should be able to: 1) identify several key developments in the origin of the opioid epidemic, 2) describe strategic initiatives that are in progress to address the epidemic, and 3) identify specific steps forward that could help address the epidemic.

This presentation by Professor Bronwyn Myers discusses the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training model in application to substance use disorders. Professor Bronwyn Myers is a Chief specialist scientist in the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Use Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council. Professor Myers also serves as an Expert Technical Assistance Advisor for the South Africa HIV ATTC.

This presentation by Professor Katherine Sorsdahl discusses the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training model with applications in the South African context. Katherine Sorsdahl is a Professor and the Co-Director of the Alan J Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health at the University of Cape Town. She also serves as Expert Curriculum Development Advisor for the South Africa HIV ATTC.

Naloxone temporarily reverses the effects of opioid overdose:slowed or stopped breathing and is typically utilized by first responders. The US surgeon general issued an advisory Thursday, April 5, 2018 recommending that more Americans carry the opioid overdose-reversing drug, naloxone which is sold under the brand name Narcan.

The Short-term Opioid Withdawal Using Buprenorphine (Bup Detox) Blending Team designed a training package to instruct treatment providers on the administration of aBup Detox Brochure Cover unique,13-day Buprenorphine taper intervention for opioid dependent patients. Research conducted in both inpatient and outpatient settings by the NIDA Clinical Trials Network demonstrated that, in contrast with the clonidine treatment group, patients receiving Buprenorphine provided more opioid-negative urine samples upon completion of the intervention. This training assumes some basic prior information about what Buprenorphine is and how it is used.            

This 8-hour self-paced course is based on the transdisciplinary foundations of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Technical Assistance Publication #21, Addiction Counseling Competencies. Designed to provide an overview of the addictive process and basic knowledge, attitudes, and skills utilized by professionals from a variety of backgrounds who work with clients experiencing substance use disorders.

2-hour, self-paced course provides a science-based introduction to substance use, substance use disorders (SUDs) and SUD treatment. Designed for undergraduate, graduate, and health professions students and practitioners who do not have a background in addictions.

This is a training for the Criminal Justice System on addiction, medications, benefits of addiction treatment in the CJ system and treatment planning.
