This training module includes PowerPoint slides and a trainer’s guide for delivering a 60-90 minute interactive presentation for support staff (i.e. front desk, schedulers) working in medical settings. The module introduces staff to the practice of Motivational Interviewing as a way to support patient-centered care and handle “challenging” patient interactions, and is intended to support MI implementation efforts in medical settings.

Staying in Touch: Using Caring Contacts to Sustain Connections with Your Clients is an online curriculum that describes a low-threshold, Caring Contacts intervention designed to help providers reduce client self-harm, increase feelings of self-efficacy, and fill treatment gaps due to health disparities or other challenges. A Caring Contact is a personalized written form of practitioner outreach to individual clients that expresses care and concern for their wellbeing. This simple, customizable intervention can be implemented at a distance during times of stress and isolation, making it a particularly useful addition to telehealth practices. This curriculum: is self-paced, with expected completion time of less than an hour; outlines the scientific support for this approach to reduce client isolation and potential self-harm; focuses, in part, on special circumstances and populations that can be hard to engage and retain in care; and includes concrete examples of Caring Contacts, as well as modifiable templates that can be downloaded and adapted for any organization’s use.   Additional Resources Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SAMHSA). This 1-hour webinar, presented on April 29, 2020, provided guidance to providers interested in delivering mental health services through telephone and/or videoconferencing. Crystal methamphetamine use is growing increasingly common among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the northeastern U.S. and is an important public health concern. This webinar, presented by Adam Viera, PhD student (Yale University), shares preliminary themes emerging from a qualitative study of MSM who use crystal methamphetamine. This comprehensive online course, developed by the Northwest ATTC, features separate modules for each of four common personnel roles in healthcare organizations: decision-makers, clinical supervisors, direct care staff, and administrative support staff. Healthcare organizations may utilize these training modules as means of an initial introduction to CM principles and practices for their staff; however, the primary intent of this online course is as a bridge to more intensive technical assistance—as outlined by Hartzler and colleagues in this article in the Journal of Substance Use and Addiction Treatment (2023) (free online). All four modules include an introduction to contingency management (CM) describing: its core elements, 3 scientifically-supported systems, how it can be used in healthcare settings to have a positive impact on clients.   Each module also offers unique content on how each role can successfully integrate CM into their program.  Note: The Administrative Support Staff module is currently available here. It will be added to HealtheKnowledge (along with 1.0 CE credit) later in spring 2023. Tom Fuchs, MEd, Behavioral Health Adult Treatment Manager for DSHS-Behavioral Health and Recovery Division, describes the 18 funded projects for the Washington State Targeted Response (WA-Opioid STR) grant, a statewide effort to address the opioid epidemic through increased access to prevention, treatment, and recovery services. Methamphetamine use is increasing in the wake of the opioid crisis, particularly in the Western United States. This webinar, presented by Sara Glick, PhD, of the University of Washington School of Medicine, describes current trends across our four-state region (WA, OR, ID, AK), including methamphetamine use among people who inject drugs, health consequences like recent HIV outbreaks, non-fatal and fatal overdose, and treatment interest and options. Sara Glick is a Research Assistant Professor at the UW School of Medicine.

Hepatitis C virus is on the rise in rural communities of the U.S. This presentation from Judith Tsui, MD, MPH (University of Washington School of Medicine) described the syndemic of opioid use disorder (OUD) and hepatitis C (HCV). Dr. Tsui presented evidence showing the current gaps in treatment for OUD and HCV among persons who inject drugs. Based on analysis of current treatment methods and real-world patient living conditions, her presentation also described research on innovative models of care to improve treatment access and outcomes for persons with OUD and HCV. This webinar, presented by Ken C. Winters, PhD, provided an overview of the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model for use with adolescents who may be using substances. In addition to a look at the parts of the SBIRT model, Dr. Winters also discussed techniques for maximizing the quality of a teen's self-report, provided an overview of the components of several recommended brief interventions, and provided links to evidence-based tools and resources. Ken C. Winters, PhD is a Senior Scientist at the Oregon Research Institute (MN affiliate) and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Psychology, University of Minnesota. His primary research interests are the assessment and treatment of adolescent drug abuse. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Abuse, and the Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. Dr. Winters received numerous research grants from the National Institute of Health and various foundations and published over 125 articles over a 30-year period. Presented on February 27, 2019, this webinar reviewed key factors necessary for effectively treating co-occurring trauma and addiction. Practical suggestions and tools were offered, including content specific to assessment, early intervention, and long-term recovery.
