Clinicians often struggle to address the unique needs of African Americans seeking mental health and substance use disorders treatment. The result is high rates of premature termination, relapse, and recidivism. Topics covered in this Black History Month presentation include: a working definition of recovery in African American communities; historical reasons recovery in African American communities is often communal in nature; 10 recovery principles for Africans Americans and how to incorporate these principles in treatment and recovery; mental health and substance use disorders protective factors for African Americans which are preventive and promote recovery.
