Motivational Interviewing and SBIRT Training 2024

The Great Lakes ATTC and Great Lakes MHTTC offers trainings in Motivational Interviewing Relational Skills, Technical Skills, SBIRT, and Motivational Interviewing Coding and Coaching.

Our training program consists of three levels offered in sequence to ensure that participants master each set of skills before advancing to the next level. This approach empowers participants to apply MI and SBIRT in their practice settings with fidelity.

What is Motivational Interviewing and what courses do we offer?

Level 1: Motivational Interviewing – Relational Skills

In this foundational level, participants delve into the essence of MI, focusing on building rapport and fostering a collaborative relationship with clients. Through interactive workshops, they learn and practice the fundamental relational skills essential for effective MI implementation.

Level 2: Motivational Interviewing Technical Skills

Building upon the relational groundwork laid in Level 1, participants advance to honing their technical proficiency in MI. Through hands-on exercises and simulations, they acquire the necessary skills to elicit and strengthen motivation for behavior change in clients.

Level 3: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)

SBIRT is an evidence-based method for reducing harm and improving outcomes for individuals with substance use disorders. It serves as a cost-effective approach for healthcare and human services professionals to help patients reducing drinking, drug use, and related health and social consequences.

Level 3: Coding and Coaching

While there is a wealth of research supporting the positive impact on outcomes across a range of problem behaviors, a large part of the appeal of MI is its measurability. In Level 3, participants learn to use the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) coding system that measures how well a practitioner is using MI. Feedback from the MITI coding system can be used to increase clinical skillfulness.

NAADAC CEs are available for successful completion of our MI and SBIRT trainings.
