Advanced Motivational Interviewing Day 2

Motivational interviewing, a treatment approach developed by William Miller, has been well established as an effective way to promote behavior change in individuals. This day-and-a-half course requires previous training and experience using motivational interviewing.  It will provide in depth instruction, practice and feedback on fostering and utilizing change talk to increase client motivation and movement toward change across all health, mental health and substance use conditions. Significant time will be devoted to “real play” practice to enable participants to gain skills necessary to elicit change talk from clients with low levels of readiness for change, thereby increasing levels of motivation and moving them toward action to address their health-related issues.

At the conclusion of the 2-day MI Academy, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how the four components of Motivational Interviewing Spirit (Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion, and Evocation) can be used to enhance motivation.
  2. Recognize change talk and sustain talk in examples of client statements.
  3. Describe at least two ways to respond to change talk in a way that strengthens it.
  4. Explain how the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Scale (MITI) can be used to evaluate work samples of MI skills.
  5. List and describe at least three (3) strategies to "roll with resistance" or reduce discord.
  6. Demonstrate, through participation in interactive activities, skills to help clients develop hope and confidence for change.
  7. Describe the importance of active listening before prematurely problem-solving solutions for the client.
  8. Explain how to exchange information, provide advice, or provide feedback within an MI style.
  9. Discuss how to utilize the “Readiness Ruler” to evaluate a client’s level of importance, confidence, and readiness for change.
  10. Demonstrate, through real plays, the use of questions and reflections to strengthen a client’s commitment for change.
