Compassion Fatigue for First Responders & Behavioral Health Professionals

Compassion Fatigue is a state characterized by a gradual lessening of compassion over time. It is common among individuals that work directly with trauma victims such as firefighters, police officers, emergency room nurses, doctors, crisis workers, psychologists, and other first responders. However, sufferers can exhibit several symptoms including hopelessness, a decrease in experiences of pleasure, depression, constant stress and anxiety, sleeplessness or nightmares, and a pervasive negative attitude. We find in the behavioral health arena it has a significant presence and can lead to negative outcomes for these helpers and can have an impact on patient care, relationships, and can lead to health issues. Mindful Self-Care is all about learning how to take care of yourself and identify those issues that trigger you to act in a negative manner. This is where the real work begins.

Objectives:

. Define compassion fatigue and how it relates to first responders.

. Recognize signs and the physical symptoms associated with compassion fatigue.

. Hands-on assessments.

. List self-care tips for first responders.

. Discuss coping skills and homework.
