The purpose of this interactive, live, virtual training is to introduce participants to strategies that can be used to best deal with patient crises, risk situations, and difficult or hard to engage patients. Participants will work on developing strategies for addressing such issues as suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, the impact of personality disorders, boundaries, transference, countertransference, inappropriate behavior, and other patient-clinician relationship type issues are discussed. Participants are encouraged to share past and present work-related experiences with handling such situations.

At the conclusion of the training session, participants should be able
to:

2. Identify the basic components of determining level of severity of risk for suicide or homicide.
3. Describe at least two concrete strategies to employ when faced with issues such as crises among clients with co-occurring substance use and mental illness.
4. Demonstrate two effective communication methods for de-escalating a patient crisis.
