988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

September 12, 2022

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is more than just an easy-to-remember number – it’s a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis. (SAMHSA, 2022). The 988 Partner Toolkit provides social media shareables, media end cards, and more to educate the public about 988.

Social Media Sharables

These shareables were designed for use as social media posts, stories and threads. You can use the full videos as individual interactives on the social media platforms, or you can use the mix and match videos together to create your own versions that make sense for your audiences.

Media End Cards

When news articles, entertainment programming, or other media material includes content addressing suicide, mental health, or emotional distress, please update any end card/boilerplate language that mentions the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL) and/or the previous 800-273-8255 number with one of the options below (to ensure your readers/viewers have a clear, simple call to action if they or someone they know needs help or is in crisis).

988 Partner Toolkit

SAMHSA recognizes the need for governments, states, territories, tribes, crisis centers, and partners to speak with one voice to ensure there is a clear understanding about what 988 is and how it will work. We encourage you to use these communication outreach materials and build upon them with your community coalitions to meet the needs of your specific audiences.

988 Branded Photos

Because of copyright concerns, the photos are available for partner use only if they are used with the 988 branding. There are currently 14 photos available. Photos are available on the Logo and Branding page. Go to the + accordion labeled Photography to get to the photos and download the full image for your use.

Holiday PSA

Zak Williams, mental health advocate and the son of the late Robin Williams, has recorded a holiday PSA promoting 988. The PSA is available for you to share on your websites, social media, and email newsletters from the SAMHSA YouTube channel.

988 FAQ Update

We have added a new FAQ about specialized services for LGBTQI+ youth who reach out to 988. The FAQ is the last FAQ under FAQS about 988 Basics.
