International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women

Published:
November 25, 2019

November 25, 2020 is designated by the United Nations as International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women

Violence against women (VAW) is one of the most prevalent health and social problems in the world. Worldwide, 1 in 3 women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, most frequently by an intimate partner.  In 2017, 1 in 2 women killed worldwide, were killed by their partner or partner’s family; compared to only 1 out of 20 men who were killed under similar circumstances.

Research in the U.S. indicates that substance use disorders (SUDs) are highly correlated with both perpetration of VAW, as well as victimization.  Similar to SUDs, VAW carries a high level of shame, stigma, and silence in our society.  These effects may be compounded when an individual and family experiences both.
