This presentation discusses strategies to identify South Africa HIV ATTC training and technical assistance offerings that meet stakeholder needs, particularly with mental health and substance use topics. We particularly focus on the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training model.

The purpose of this introductory training is to provide HIV clinicians with a detailed overview of the neurobiology of addiction, the impact of HIV on the brain and central nervous system (CNS), and the detrimental impact of the intersectionality of multiple stigmatized identities. This training is a companion to, and can be conducted in conjunction with the “How Change Happens: Substance Use Disorders and HIV/AIDS” training curriculum.

The purpose of this training is to provide HIV clinicians with an overview of the challenges and strategies for change in working with individuals living with HIV/AIDS and a diagnosis of a substance use disorder. This training is a companion to and can be conducted in conjunction with the “Nature of Addiction and HIV” training curriculum.

Working with persons from diverse backgrounds in any discipline requires that professionals engage in a culturally responsive manner that can enhance the clinical processes used to provide individualized treatment and health care. This interactive two-part webinar (90 minutes each) will present on the importance of acknowledging our own values & beliefs.

Hispanic adolescents in the US tend to grow up with intersecting Latino and American cultures. Addressing maladaptive behavior with Latino youth encourages a culturally informed approach that integrates an ecological understanding of their world and the factors that influences their behavior. Some of these can include substance use disorders, mental health concerns, family dysfunction, adolescent development stages.

Georgiana Wilton, PhD, from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health delivered a didactic presentation focused on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), which is a group of conditions that can occur in an individual whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. The presentation reviewed the data on alcohol use during pregnancy, screening for FASD, and tips to support families impacted by FASD.

Karol Kaltenbach, PhD, delivered a didactic presentation focused on medication for the treatment of addiction (MAT) in pregnant women. The presentation discussed why the consideration of this medication was important for this population, and addressed some common myths with background information and scientific research on some of the commonly used medications.
