Due to the length of the articles written by our authors, the March 2023 Dialogue newsletter was split into two parts. Part 1 was published March 7 and Part 2 was published March 14. Part 2 of the March newsletter contains articles: MHTTC: Celebrating Women in Medicine | Regional Spotlight: Sean's House. Additional sections include behavioral health observances and virtual training and webinar events. The Dialogue is designed to inform behavioral and mental health professionals of news and upcoming events in the HHS Region 3/Central East region.   The Great Lakes Current is the e-newsletter of the Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC.   The March 2023 issue honors National Women's History Month by sharing resources from the Mental Health Technology Transfer (MHTTC) Network that focus on an array of behavioral health issues affecting women and girls. SAMHSA has included Trauma-Informed Care among its designated best practices for many reasons. Trauma-Informed Care can bring about, not just change, but an actual transformation that takes place on many levels of an organization. This ongoing system-wide approach that is grounded in a scientific understanding of trauma can make service relationships much safer for both clients and staff, not only in SUD treatment facilities, but in all mental health settings. This easy-to-use and adaptable guide is designed to lead TTC consultants through the Trauma-Informed Care implementation process.

About this series: The Great Lakes ATTC and MHTTC are excited to offer these introductory training videos on the use of SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment). This series includes three simulated patient recordings with each portraying a realistic scenario focusing on one part of the SBIRT screening process (brief intervention, initiating brief treatment, referral to treatment).   The Great Lakes ATTC and MHTTC also offer live virtual trainings on SBIRT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). These trainings take place on a recurring basis throughout the year, and they are perfect for those who are new to MI and SBIRT, as well as practitioners who are interested in refreshing their knowledge and skills in an interactive virtual learning environment. The Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC have created an online flipbook for the Alcohol is STILL a Drug series. Alcohol is STILL a Drug is comprised of ten 30-minute videos recorded between September 2021–August 2022. Each video addresses the impacts of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and is presented by a leading professional in that field.    You can view the flipbook online or you can download a PDF version. The videos and supplemental resources are accessible in either format.      ABOUT THE SERIES: The opioid crisis, increasing stimulant misuse, and marijuana legalization often dominate the news—yet alcohol remains the number one substance negatively impacting physical health, mental health, social engagement, and financial stability for individuals throughout the US.   While this series will focus on the hopefulness of recovery from AUD, it will also take a deep dive into what we know about the full impact of alcohol overuse and the ways it affects everyone, even those who do not personally misuse alcohol.   The Alcohol Is Still a Drug series offers viewers the following learning objectives: Summarize the current impacts of problematic alcohol use in various/special populations, including pregnant women, youth, rural, and minority populations Assess and prioritize alcohol reduction efforts in targeted settings Describe the current efforts to curb problematic alcohol use, including best practices in providing treatment Understand the importance of person-centered approaches to treatment and recovery

The Great Lakes A/MH/PTTC is offering this training for individuals working in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, WI. This training is being provided in response to a need identified by Region 5 stakeholders. Alcohol is STILL a Drug: An Exploratory Webinar Series (June 7, 2022) Recording   DESCRIPTION  Alcohol is STILL a drug.  The opioid crisis, increase in stimulant misuse, and marijuana legalization dominate the news— yet alcohol remains the number one substance causing health, social, legal and financial problems throughout the US.    While this series will focus on the hopefulness of recovery from alcohol use disorder, we’ll also take a deep dive into what we know about the full     SERIES LEARNING OBJECTIVES These are the overall learning objectives for the full 10-session series:  Summarize the current impacts of problematic alcohol use in various/special populations, including pregnant women, youth, rural, and minority populations.  Assess and prioritize alcohol reduction efforts in targeted settings.  Describe the current efforts to curb problematic alcohol use, including best practices in providing treatment.      TRAINER Tim Devitt, Psy.D., LCPC, CADC, has a 30+ year commitment to providing and leading recovery-oriented mental health and substance use services, including integrated mental health and substance use treatment, permanent supported housing, assertive community treatment, and substance use outpatient and intensive outpatient programing. Tim has presented nationally and co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles and a book chapter on the integration of evidence-based practices to best meet the comprehensive needs of people with substance use and mental health conditions. Tim is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), a lecturer at the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy and Practice, The University of Chicago, and a board member of Serenity Academy Chicago, a 501(c)(3) with the mission to launch Alternative Peer Groups (APGs) and a recovery high school in Chicago.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, cannabis use rates increased in 2020, with almost 50 million individuals 12 or older reporting use of cannabis in the past year. This increase is reflected in the state-specific data for HHS Region 8 in five of the six states (Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Utah).   Learning Objectives: Summary of relevant research findings and association recommendations to consider when clients present with medical cannabis cards Risk factors for the development of cannabis use disorders Diagnostic symptoms of cannabis use disorders Use of a decision-making matrix for medical cannabis practice with case scenarios   Cannabis Webinar Series: The Clinician’s Guide to Addressing Medical Cannabis in Substance Use Treatment Settings     This webinar is part of a series on the current science of cannabis, for more information on the other webinars in the series view the series homepage.

The Tip card provides a brief review of information that providers need to know about traumatic brain injury and behavioral health/substance use disorders. It summarizes the key points from the TBI toolkit that is also available on the website.

The National Hispanic and Latino ATTC and PTTC are proud to announce the publication of our first newsletter! This product has been a labor of love. An idea that sprouted out of a commitment to find additional ways to honor our culture, call out disparities that persist, celebrate successes in our communities and amplify the contributions being made by Latinos in behavioral health. The Client Workbook for Substance Use and Brain Injury was developed by the SUBI Project Team Second Edition (2021) Carolyn Lemsky, PhD, CPsych, ABPP/ABCN, Tim Godden, MSW, RSW, Advanced Practice Clinician and Maria Crowley, MA, CRC-Consultation, Editing, and Design, the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators (NASHIA). It is available online for free and it can be used in conjunction with the TBI Toolkit developed in collaboration with Region 7 Mid-America ATTC.
