Stigma is a major barrier preventing millions of people who are struggling with substance use from entering treatment today. This presentation is designed to help professionals break that stigma that creates an unnecessary barrier to treatment by understanding recovery oriented language and strategies that can be integrated into practice immediately. Participants will: Be able to identify use strengths based language to reduce stigma associated with substance use disorders. Be able to conceptualize the factors that influence stigma associated with substance use disorders and their consequences. Be able to discuss targets and interventions aimed at addressing stigma associated with substance use.

This presentation by Professor Bronwyn Myers discusses the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training model in application to substance use disorders. Professor Bronwyn Myers is a Chief specialist scientist in the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Use Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council. Professor Myers also serves as an Expert Technical Assistance Advisor for the South Africa HIV ATTC.

This presentation by Professor Katherine Sorsdahl discusses the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training model with applications in the South African context. Katherine Sorsdahl is a Professor and the Co-Director of the Alan J Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health at the University of Cape Town. She also serves as Expert Curriculum Development Advisor for the South Africa HIV ATTC.

Interview with Julia Alexander, recovery advocate and Co-Director of the Great Lakes Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC). Julia is also the Indiana State Coordinator for the Great Lakes ATTC, PTTC, and Mental Health TTC. In this podcast, Julia shares info on her long-term recovery and how to start a recovery community organization (RCO).

In this webinar, Joe Glass, PhD, MSW, of Kaiser Permanente WA Health Research Institute, examined the stigma of substance use disorders. Dr. Glass reviewed the scientific evidence about how stigma shapes healthcare experiences and treatment seeking, and discussed practical issues such as why and how to avoid using stigmatizing language.

Addressing maladaptive behavior with Latino youth encourages a culturally informed approach that integrates an ecological understanding of their world and the factors that influences their behavior. This 8-hour self-paced course is based on the transdisciplinary foundations of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Technical Assistance Publication #21, Addiction Counseling Competencies. Designed to provide an overview of the addictive process and basic knowledge, attitudes, and skills utilized by professionals from a variety of backgrounds who work with clients experiencing substance use disorders.

This curriculum describes a family-centered approach to treatment, care, and supervision of pregnant and postpartum women (PPW) with a substance use disorder and their families. It contains six modules designed for delivery in 45-minute in-service sessions by a clinical supervisor or similar professional. The primary audience is addiction treatment providers and the secondary audience is their community partners. The curriculum contains trainer and participant manuals and slides.

Caring for and Empowering Women with Substance Use Disorders is an e-learning series that features courses for clinicians and staff who work with and support women in treatment and recovery.
