This curriculum describes a family-centered approach to treatment, care, and supervision of pregnant and postpartum women (PPW) with a substance use disorder and their families. It contains six modules designed for delivery in 45-minute in-service sessions by a clinical supervisor or similar professional. The primary audience is addiction treatment providers and the secondary audience is their community partners. The curriculum contains trainer and participant manuals and slides.

This interview monograph, developed by the ATTC CoE-PPW, features the unique perspectives of leaders in the pregnant/postpartum women's treatment and recovery field. Through policy, research, and practice lenses, these leaders share how the field has broadened its scope to begin serving the whole family. Interviewees discuss the historical evolution toward family-centered care and next steps for improving care for families.

Caring for and Empowering Women with Substance Use Disorders is an e-learning series that features courses for clinicians and staff who work with and support women in treatment and recovery. In this course, Reproductive and Sexual Health, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about family planning and sexually transmitted infections among women who misuse substances. This course includes interactive activities and short video clips narrated by Dr. Hendree Jones.

The Language Matters Awareness Card was developed in conjunction with the ATTC Network's initiative for reducing stigma and discrimination through the use of appropriate language when talking about substance use disorders or persons who have this disease. Georgiana Wilton, PhD, from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health delivered a didactic presentation focused on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), which is a group of conditions that can occur in an individual whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. The presentation reviewed the data on alcohol use during pregnancy, screening for FASD, and tips to support families impacted by FASD.

Karol Kaltenbach, PhD, delivered a didactic presentation focused on medication for the treatment of addiction (MAT) in pregnant women. The presentation discussed why the consideration of this medication was important for this population, and addressed some common myths with background information and scientific research on some of the commonly used medications.

A Tour of Motivational Interviewing: An Interprofessional Road Map for Behavior Change is a four-hour course in Motivational Interviewing (MI), a form of collaborative conversation for strengthening a person's own motivation and commitment to change, by eliciting and exploring the person's own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. This course takes the learner on a tour of the essential skills used to strengthen an individual’s motivation for behavior change. This online course was prepared by the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Nursing and Health Studies’ Mid-America Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Mid-America ATTC), under a cooperative agreement from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).            

Jacki Witt, JD, WHNP-BC, from the National Clinical Training Center for Family Planning delivered a didactic presentation on women’s health issues. The presentation discussed current cervical and breast cancer screening guidelines as well as information about contraception that providers can share with female clients in their programs

Ruth Paris, PhD, LICSW, from the Boston University School of Social Work delivered a didactic presentation on parenting for women in recovery. The presentation discussed challenges to engaging women who are pregnant/postpartum in treatment and different parenting interventions that should be considered in PPW programs.
