COURSE DESCRIPTION Do your presentations inspire and influence your audiences? Do you know how to tackle tough topics and information overload? We use presentations as one of our primary strategies to share content knowledge, build skills, ignite calls to action and affect culture change. Many of us have attempted to create compelling presentations, however, most of us never receive any formal training in presentation design - despite all we expect presentations to do for us. In this 3.5 hour virtual workshop, participants will learn practical skills to plan and deliver exceptional presentations using the tools and resources they already have. Special emphasis will be placed on audience analysis - in helping presenters determine the unique needs of each audience and developing material that will speak to those unique needs. This workshop is now full! We apologize for the inconvenience. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Apply a four-step process to create brain-friendly presentations List the most common presenter mistakes and understand how to prevent them Use tools and techniques that enhance learning Increase audience engagement and participation PRESENTERS Jamie Comstock and Robin Carr founded Info Inspired in 2014, after many years of designing and giving presentations with no formal training in this area, and watching their public health colleagues struggle with the same skills gap. Both are certified prevention specialists with 30 years’ combined experience in the field. They’ve spent the last several years researching and testing ways to not only capture and hold an audience’s attention, but to also inspire audiences. They’ve spent countless hours refining the presentation planning process, identifying free resources, and learning how to maximize the tools they already had. It’s also important to know that they aren’t graphic designers, artists, or especially tech savvy. Everything they do, you can do too. They’ve presented at the Community Anti Drug Coalitions of America’s Leadership Forum, the Maine Public Health Association Annual Meeting, the New England Institute of Addiction Studies, the New England School of Best Practices, and provided training and technical assistance to non-profit organizations throughout New England. They have been featured on the Organizing for Change podcast and have an on-demand webinar available through the New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center. *CONTACT HOUR ELIGIBILITY Only a certificate of attendance is available for this workshop, which will be processed within 30 days. This webinar is a collaboration between the Central East ATTC  and the Central East PTTC.

Description: Suicide is a significant public health issue in New York State and across the country. U.S. deaths from drug overdoses leapt nearly 30% to more than 93,000 in 2020, the highest ever recorded. But how do we respond to the emotional and psychological toll the suicide or overdose of a client has on professional caregivers? What are the best ways to support both staff and clients? This interactive 2-session (4hrs each) training will provide an overview of the main issues that can arise when clinical providers and staff experience the death of a client by suicide or opioid overdose. The content provides guidance on how to address grief, debriefing staff and clients, supporting those affected by the death, risk identification, and the use of risk assessments for suicidal ideation. Content will also include the behavioral, physical, and psychological responses to grief, self-care and coping strategies, overdose postvention, and ‘Response Roadmap,’ plans for agencies including ‘Zero Suicide Initiative,’ and modifications for developing an agency overdose prevention plan. Credits: Participants must attend both parts in their entirety, turn on their video cameras, and to actively participate in order to receive a certificate of completion. This training meets approval for 8 renewal hours (CASAC, CPP, CPS) and 8 initial hours (CPP, CPS) through New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS). In the U.S., firearm-related suicides account for almost half of suicide deaths and for most fatal firearm injuries. In clinical settings, lethal means counseling has been proposed as a way of addressing this risk. Implementation efforts, however, have been accompanied by growing awareness of a “culture gap” between clinicians with low familiarity with firearms and patients with potential distrust of clinical interventions. This has resulted in calls for cultural competency training among clinicians engaged in discussions about firearms with patients. This webinar, Firearms, Culture & Suicide Risk: What Is Safety?, will provide an introduction to selected cultural factors related to firearm ownership and use with the intent of improving cross-cultural communication and the quality of suicide care.  Learning objectives State the rationale for focusing on cultural aspects of firearm ownership as a way of addressing suicide risk.  Engage in self-reflection to locate their own attitudes towards firearms within a range of cultural worldviews.  Understand the range of responses to the question, "What is safety?" within cultural frameworks of firearm ownership and use. Presenter: Jeffrey C. Sung, M.D. Dr. Jeffrey Sung is a clinical assistant professor in the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and faculty member with the Center for Suicide Prevention and Recovery.  For seventeen years he provided psychiatric care and consultation on a Health Care for the Homeless Network team at Harborview Medical Center’s Pioneer Square Clinic.  He has contributed to state-level guidelines on suicide care and developed and delivered training in suicide care for health care and corporate professionals.  Current work with the UW has been with Forefront Suicide Prevention’s Safer Homes program to improve cultural competence among health care professionals engaged in discussions with patients about firearms and suicide risk.    Download/share flyer

Peer professionals provide an array of recovery-oriented supports and person-centered care which include empathetic engagement with survivors of trauma circumstances. This work at times can increase the peer’s vulnerability to vicarious trauma or secondary stress. Potentially it can result in the loss of ability to objectively help others find their recovery pathways and can affect the peer’s mental and emotional wellbeing. This two-hour interactive workshop will review how trauma situations may present, signs to recognize and cues alerting as to when to step away from a trauma inducing situation. Content will also offer practical strategies for self-care including ways to build resiliency.
