The 2024 Leadership Institute presented by the Mid-America Addition Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) is open to persons who work in behavioral health, mental health, or recovery agencies in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. Candidates must complete the Candidate Application Form and be nominated by leadership within their agency using the Agency Nomination Form. The guide was created in collaboration by the National Family Support Technical Assistance Center, the National Federation of Families, the African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence, the Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities on Aging, the Center of Excellence on LGBTQ+ Behavioral Health Equity, Severe Mental Illness Advisor, the National Alliance on Mental Health, and SAMHSA.

Native storytelling is a time-honored way of teaching life lessons and handing down cultural and traditional knowledge, beliefs, ethics, and relationships with nature and other people. Characters in Native stories exemplify both "good" traits like courage and integrity and undesirable traits like duplicity and compulsive or addictive behavior. Social Wellness fact sheet

  Mid-America ATTC  (MATTC) partnered with the Ethnic Communities Opioid Response Network in Missouri, the Addiction Policy Forum, and the Opioid Response Network (ORN in IA, KS, MO, and NE) to translate Prevention of Opioid Use Education Materials into ten different languages and ensure they are culturally appropriate.

Over the past four years, the staff and consultants responsible for providing training and technical assistance to Tribal Opioid Response grantees have been continually impressed and inspired by the determination, resilience, and creativity of TOR programs across the country. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the TOR grantees’ journey. As of Sept. 29, 2022, we will no longer be providing training or technical assistance to TOR grantees. The resource page we created will remain available to all on the National American Indian and Alaska Native Addiction Technology Transfer website, and we compiled this document of additional resources as a farewell gift to the TOR grantees we’ve worked with over the years. Thank you for the important work you’re doing in your communities, and thank you for allowing us to be a part of it.

The Pacific Southwest and Mountain Plains Addiction Technology Transfer Centers created a new product to assist behavioral health providers and peer support specialists that provide services to People with Substance Use Disorders (PWSUDs) using the telephone (mobile, landline, or internet phones). This document provides sample policies and recommended practices that behavioral health providers and peer support specialists can use and/or adapt to help guide the delivery of Audio-Only Telehealth (AOTs). Many behavioral health treatment and peer support experts predict that patients/clients/peers will receive services in a hybrid delivery mode (in-person, videoconferencing, and telephone) in the near future. As such, behavioral health providers and peer support specialists will need to expand their skills and competencies while agencies and/or organizations will need policies and practices in place to guide service delivery utilizing AOTs. This product can be used as a starting point to assist in the implementation of AOTs or to enhance current AOTs. Additional products, infographics with tips, and training events regarding AOTs will be coming soon.

The term “Gender Diverse” encompasses a broad universe of gender identities and expressions. “Transgender” is often used as an umbrella term for the community, though not all gender expansive individuals consider themselves to be Transgender. Other terms in common use include Nonbinary, 2Spirit (used by Indigenous people only) Enby, Genderqueer, Gender Fluid, Agender, and Pangender, among many others. This infographic factsheet provides statistics and prevalence of SUD diagnoses among U.S. Transgender and Cisgender adults, risk factors, steps organizations can take to be welcoming to gender diverse individuals, and recommendations for treatment programs.

Harm reduction is any action that reduces risk and increases personal and public safety. Harm reduction approaches have proven to prevent death, injury, disease, overdose, prevent substance misuse or disorder and most of us practice harm reduction techniques daily. For example, when we wear a seatbelt or apply sunscreen we are using harm reduction strategies.  Fentanyl strips, naloxone, and needle exchange programs are also examples of harm reduction.  This poster identifies some of the most common harm reduction methods in an attempt to normalize the term "harm reduction" and broaden the definition.   The Spanish translations were prepared by consultants for the Mountain Plains ATTC. While reasonable efforts are made to provide accurate translations, acknowledging the diversity of Spanish and English Language, some words/phrases may differ.   The poster can be downloaded in multiple formats directly from the MPATTC website. This product was designed for display as an 11x17 sized poster in a location most visible and accessible to behavioral health providers, educators, and/or peer recovery specialists but is also available in an 8.5x11 format for in-house printing. Fatal overdoses are skyrocketing, and rates of substance use remain high, demonstrating the need to expand substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. In 2020, fatal overdoses in the Central East increased 25% (from 9,909 to 12,377), with overdose rates above the national average in every state except Virginia. Rates of substance use and SUD are persistently elevated. Funding additional treatment services and expanding access to existing treatment can help address the problem. This factsheet provides statistics and justifications for increasing SUD treatment.

Fatal substance-involved overdoses have significantly worsened over the COVID-19 pandemic. Long a major public health concern in the Central East region and nationwide, fatal overdoses are growing faster than rates of substance use. Overdoses are occurring across all ages, races, ethnicities, genders, and geographic areas [CDC]. Fentanyl is the largest driver of the explosion in overdoses. But overdoses of other substances—particularly methamphetamine—have also increased dramatically. In 2020, the Central East contained 9 of the 10 counties and independent cities with the highest fatal overdose rates in the United States. Over 80% (87) of the counties and cities in the region with reliable data had an overdose rate above the national average. The overdose rate in 31 jurisdictions was at least double the national average. And the fatal overdose rate was three to six times the national average in 11 counties in West Virginia; in Baltimore City and Cecil County, Maryland; and in Petersburg City, Virginia.
