    A little about the product:  The investigator, co-author Dawn Tyus, sought to learn about the realities, needs, strengths, and challenges of African American women in treatment and recovery. And she did it by asking women in long-term recovery about their own experiences and observations in treatment and early recovery, and about the wisdom they had earned through the years. Those interviews yielded a wealth of knowledge, experience, and ideas for treatment and recovery support. They will form the backbone of a collection of guidelines for treatment and peer-based recovery support for African American women, to be published this year (2020) by the Southeast Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Southeast ATTC) at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. But first, this article introduces eleven extraordinary women and some of their early treatment and recovery experiences and lessons

Julia Alexander, co-director of the Great Lakes PTTC,  shares her experience as a person in long-term recovery along with recommendations on starting a recovery community organization (RCO).   

Staying in Touch: Using Caring Contacts to Sustain Connections with Your Clients is an online curriculum that describes a low-threshold, Caring Contacts intervention designed to help providers reduce client self-harm, increase feelings of self-efficacy, and fill treatment gaps due to health disparities or other challenges. A Caring Contact is a personalized written form of practitioner outreach to individual clients that expresses care and concern for their wellbeing. This simple, customizable intervention can be implemented at a distance during times of stress and isolation, making it a particularly useful addition to telehealth practices. This curriculum: is self-paced, with expected completion time of less than an hour; outlines the scientific support for this approach to reduce client isolation and potential self-harm; focuses, in part, on special circumstances and populations that can be hard to engage and retain in care; and includes concrete examples of Caring Contacts, as well as modifiable templates that can be downloaded and adapted for any organization’s use.   Additional Resources Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SAMHSA). As COVID-19 has progressed in many of our communities, several questions have been brought to the attention of the Region 7 Mid-America Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Mid-America ATTC). The goal of this FAQ is to provide practical answers to these recurring questions that may result in immediate action. Mid-America ATTC will update this list monthly at minimum, until updates subside.  

Translations     --This was Part 2 of a 2-Part Webinar Series-- This presentation engaged participants in strategizing ways we as helping professionals can support continued healing, resilience and resistance within the Latinx communities we serve. This presentation explored racial battle fatigue, spotlighting and other workplace forms of oppression that impede our long-term engagement in this work. A final outcome was for participants to end this workshop with a plan for radical self-care and critical allyship to promote our well-being as helping professionals and sustain us in this work. Spanning two decades of research, trauma-informed (T-I) practice is seen as a new frontier in behavioral health and social services (National Council for Behavioral Health, n.d.), but more is needed to honor culturally-grounded sources for resilience and resistance when healing from substance use for Latinx individuals and communities. Building on the Critical Trauma model that addresses the role of oppression-based trauma in substance use and the unique, culturally-rooted resilience and resistance characteristics for Latinx, this presentation proposed a set of culturally sustaining practices in treating individuals impacted by substance use. Speaker Anna Nelson, LCSW College Assistant Professor @NMSU School of Social Work An educator for the previous decade and helping professional since 1996, Anna Nelson, LCSW, is a College Assistant Professor with NMSU School of Social Work and a Ph.D. Candidate in Educational Leadership and Administration. Ms. Nelson employs mixed-methods participatory action research grounded in Critical Race and Intersectionality theories to understand cultural, cumulative and collective trauma and its impact on communities with a strong focus on identity-driven resilience and resistance. From 2010- 2016, she served as Executive Director of the New Mexico Forum for Youth in Community, a statewide network intermediary that promoted racial, health, academic and economic justice for all youth statewide. Her professional practice emphases are youth, family and community engagement, violence prevention, trauma/healing informed culturally sustaining service systems development, and policy transformation, particularly for child welfare and juvenile justice systems.

This slide deck provides a brief overview of the role recovery capital plays in increasing assets and identifying barriers to recovery (Hennessey, 2017). It is designed to be used by behavioral health academic faculty, trainers, and state agency staff members for a variety of audiences. Each slide has notes for the presenter to provide guidance if necessary. References are included on the slides and in the notes. This guide book is designed for leadership in a trauma-informed care initiative or a ROSC transformation—maybe in an organization, in a whole system, or in a whole community.   A Challenge to Leadership has 8 sections. Each section has a set of “action notes,” which are basically workbook tools.  The Action Notes can be used to start a planning process for a change team or a transformation team.

Katherine Sorsdahl is a Professor and the Co-Director of the Alan J Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health at the University of Cape Town. She also serves as Expert Curriculum Development Advisor for the South Africa HIV ATTC.

This presentation by Professor Bronwyn Myers discusses the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training model in application to substance use disorders. Professor Bronwyn Myers is a Chief specialist scientist in the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Use Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council. Professor Myers also serves as an Expert Technical Assistance Advisor for the South Africa HIV ATTC.

In this webinar, Dr. Dennis Donovan, PhD, of the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute, University of Washington, describes the Healing of the Canoe (HOC) project, a collaborative between the Suquamish Tribe, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe (PGST), and the University of Washington Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute (ADAI) to plan, implement, and evaluate culturally grounded interventions to reduce health disparities and promote health with both Native American tribes.
