This infographic discusses xylazine, a non-opioid animal sedative and tranquilizer, also known as "tranq," that is being used as an additive to the illicit opioid supply, particularly fentanyl. It covers key concerns including overdose risk, heart and blood pressure problems, necrotic tissue damage, treatment challenges, and harm reduction barriers. The New England ATTC co-hosted the Recovery Science and Harm Reduction (RSHR) Reading Group meeting on April 20, 2023. American Indians and Alaska Natives are less likely than any other racial or ethnic group to use alcohol at all. At the same time, alcohol is the most-used substance among Native peoples. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 3 in 10 Native American young adults (age 18-25) report binge drinking (consuming five or more drinks in 2 hours); 1 in 11 report heavy alcohol use (binge drinking on 5 or more days in the past month); and 1 in 10 have an alcohol use disorder (2018). Moreover, 1 in 6 Native youth (age 12-17) engage in underage drinking, the highest rate of alcohol use of all racial/ethnic groups (SAMHSA, 2019). The high prevalence of alcohol use among Native Americans is attributed to factors stemming from colonization, including poverty, historical and intergenerational traumas, and health inequities. The era of boarding schools has also contributed to higher and long-term alcohol use disorders with AI/AN populations (2012).

The use of electronic vaporizing devices (“vaping”) has skyrocketed in popularity since their widespread introduction across the United States. Through these devices, consumers inhale an aerosolized liquid compound, most commonly liquid nicotine or cannabis-derived chemicals (both CBD and THC). Risks stemming from vaping present an important public health challenge, particularly for youth, but also among adults. While significant research gaps remain, a growing number of evidence-based practices are available to behavioral health practitioners.  

The purpose of the listening sessions was to gather information from family members and loved ones of people with substance use challenges to better understand family members’ experiences supporting and seeking support for their loved one who is using substances; to ask what questions family members have about supporting their loved one who is using substances; to ask who or what is providing support for family members; and the unmet needs for support for family members. This report describes the process and findings of the first phase of this consultation process: listening sessions with family members and loved ones of people who use substances. This project is in collaboration with the African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence and National Hispanic and Latino ATTC.

The guide was created in collaboration by the National Family Support Technical Assistance Center, the National Federation of Families, the African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence, the Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities on Aging, the Center of Excellence on LGBTQ+ Behavioral Health Equity, Severe Mental Illness Advisor, the National Alliance on Mental Health, and SAMHSA.

The shifting landscape of regulations related to telehealth can make it difficult for practitioners to keep up with this important area. This document gives a brief overview of national and regional telehealth trends for behavioral health services, with a focus on Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 6 which includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Current laws and administrative codes for behavioral health treatment that use telehealth to deliver services were examined to prepare this document.  

Native storytelling is a time-honored way of teaching life lessons and handing down cultural and traditional knowledge, beliefs, ethics, and relationships with nature and other people. Characters in Native stories exemplify both "good" traits like courage and integrity and undesirable traits like duplicity and compulsive or addictive behavior. Social Wellness fact sheet

  Mid-America ATTC  (MATTC) partnered with the Ethnic Communities Opioid Response Network in Missouri, the Addiction Policy Forum, and the Opioid Response Network (ORN in IA, KS, MO, and NE) to translate Prevention of Opioid Use Education Materials into ten different languages and ensure they are culturally appropriate.

Over the past four years, the staff and consultants responsible for providing training and technical assistance to Tribal Opioid Response grantees have been continually impressed and inspired by the determination, resilience, and creativity of TOR programs across the country. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the TOR grantees’ journey. As of Sept. 29, 2022, we will no longer be providing training or technical assistance to TOR grantees. The resource page we created will remain available to all on the National American Indian and Alaska Native Addiction Technology Transfer website, and we compiled this document of additional resources as a farewell gift to the TOR grantees we’ve worked with over the years. Thank you for the important work you’re doing in your communities, and thank you for allowing us to be a part of it.

The Pacific Southwest and Mountain Plains Addiction Technology Transfer Centers created a new product to assist behavioral health providers and peer support specialists that provide services to People with Substance Use Disorders (PWSUDs) using the telephone (mobile, landline, or internet phones). This document provides sample policies and recommended practices that behavioral health providers and peer support specialists can use and/or adapt to help guide the delivery of Audio-Only Telehealth (AOTs). Many behavioral health treatment and peer support experts predict that patients/clients/peers will receive services in a hybrid delivery mode (in-person, videoconferencing, and telephone) in the near future. As such, behavioral health providers and peer support specialists will need to expand their skills and competencies while agencies and/or organizations will need policies and practices in place to guide service delivery utilizing AOTs. This product can be used as a starting point to assist in the implementation of AOTs or to enhance current AOTs.
