The Buprenorphine Treatment for Young Adults Blending Team designed a training package which highlights the findings of the NIDA CTN study that compared longer term versus short-term buprenorphine/naloxone treatment in an outpatient setting. The 3-hour training program examines the prevalence of and treatment admission rates for nonmedical use of opioids among young adults; provides an overview of opioid use among young adults; explores and increases understanding of the results of new research on using buprenorphine to treat opioid addiction in young adults; and describes the implications of these findings for the treatment of opioid addiction in young adults.

This presentation consisted of two inspirational speakers discussing the work of Rise Together, a school-based substance prevention program. Presented by Anthony Alvarado and Douglas Darby, two young adults in recovery.

This curriculum describes a family-centered approach to treatment, care, and supervision of pregnant and postpartum women (PPW) with a substance use disorder and their families. It contains six modules designed for delivery in 45-minute in-service sessions by a clinical supervisor or similar professional. The primary audience is addiction treatment providers and the secondary audience is their community partners. The curriculum contains trainer and participant manuals and slides.

This interview monograph, developed by the ATTC CoE-PPW, features the unique perspectives of leaders in the pregnant/postpartum women's treatment and recovery field. Through policy, research, and practice lenses, these leaders share how the field has broadened its scope to begin serving the whole family. Interviewees discuss the historical evolution toward family-centered care and next steps for improving care for families.

Addiction is a family disease. Yet mothers are often treated in isolation from their children and partners, having to choose between getting treatment and keeping their families together. One revolutionary program in Compton, California lets women bring them all -- fathers/partners and children of all ages -- to experience the recovery journey together. Ruth Paris, PhD, LICSW, from the Boston University School of Social Work delivered a didactic presentation on parenting for women in recovery. The presentation discussed challenges to engaging women who are pregnant/postpartum in treatment and different parenting interventions that should be considered in PPW programs.

Thomas McMahon, PhD, Yale University School of Medicine, delivered a didactic presentation on how PPW programs can better serve fathers and partners. The presentation discussed the importance of engaging men, facts about fathers and fathering, and considerations for building programming for fathers.

Kathryn Icenhower, PhD, CEO of SHIELDS for Families in Compton, CA delivered a didactic presentation on services for younger children (birth to age 5). The presentation covered what comprises a quality early childhood education program, developmental domains, program design, developmental assessment, services strategies, and staffing.

ATTC Center of Excellence Director, Pat Stilen, and Steering Committee Chair, Lonnetta Albright, delivered a didactic presentation on family-centered care during the first session of PPW Project ECHO. Their presentation summarized the ATTC Center of Excellence’s integrated framework of family-centered recovery and wellness that incorporates perspectives from the PPW, substance use disorder/recovery, and health care fields.
