        S2 Ep3: Parenting Through Your Recovery Journey In this episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with Technology Transfer Specialist and President and CEO of Inentional Begginnings, LLC, Sharon Hesseltine. We turn our attention to the stigma and barriers that women face while parenting or pregnant while being challenged with substance use disorder (SUD). Sharon highlights her personal journey as a mother while plowing through her road to recovery. She also debunks some common myths of being pregnant with a SUD.  Listeners will get an overview of her newest project, "Providing Peer-Based Recovery Support Services for Pregnant and Parenting Families".        Sharon Hesseltine, BSW is the President and CEO of Intentional Beginnings Consulting & Training, a small non-profit with the mission of strengthening organizations and individuals serving those who experience substance use disorders, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and trauma. Sharon received her Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Southern Illinois University in 1981, and in 2011 completed a two-year post-graduate Certificate in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health from the University of Minnesota. For over 30 years Sharon has worked in Public Health and specialized in early childhood development, women’s health, and addiction. Her career has ranged from providing direct services to women through managing two sober living residences to designing and facilitating statewide and local collaborative initiatives that call on her skills in public policy, strategic planning, cross-sector collaboration, program assessment, and marketing. She is a national trainer, Technology Transfer Specialist, and facilitator for multiple organizations including the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, the Addiction Technology Transfer Centers (ATTC), and the Opioid Response Network. In 2018, Sharon took the lead in developing SUD specific training for Peer Support Specialists and Supervisors for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Sharon is passionate about reducing the stigma associated with addiction and developing the capacity of communities, organizations, and individuals to better meet the needs of individuals with substance use disorders. The Mountain Plains ATTC is proud to collaborate with the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators (NASHIA) to sponsor a training series with the of goal increasing knowledge and skills regarding individuals with brain injuries and mental health and substance use disorders. Specifically, this series will highlight individuals with SUDs and a brain injury; youth with co-occurring disorders, and justice-involved individuals with brain injuries. Implications and recommendations for assessment and treatment will be highlighted in each of the 75-minute sessions.   Learn how to use the Building Blocks of Brain Development to understand typical neurodevelopment and neurodiversity among youth. Develop skills in applying the screening and assessment strategies of the Building Blocks of Brain Development to serve youth with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Examine the underlying skill deficits of "can'ts" (instead of "won'ts") which allows for antecedent management/interventions versus consequence-based management in serving youth.   Presenter: Karen McAvoy, PsyD, is dually credentialed as a clinical and school psychologist. She practiced as a Pediatric Psychologist at Seattle and Denver Children’s Hospitals and as the Director of the Center for Concussion with Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. She also practiced as a School Psychologist for 20 years serving as Coordinator of Mental Health, Coordinator of Manifestation Determinations, and Coordinator of the Brain Injury Team at Cherry Creek School District. After 20 years on the frontlines in a school district, Dr. McAvoy then served as a consultant for an additional 10 years to the Colorado Department of Education - providing trainings to multi-disciplinary school teams across the state of Colorado on the impact of brain injury and neuro-diversity on learning and behavior.

Rasmus, PhD, Director of the Center for Alaska Native Health Research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks The Qungasvik (kung-az-vik) "Toolbox" is a multilevel strength-based intervention developed by Yup'ik Alaska Native communities to reduce and prevent alcohol use disorder (AUD) and suicide in youth and young adults at highest risk. During this webinar, Dr. Stacy Rasmus: 1) Described the science to practice model that supported the development and delivery of the culturally-tailored intervention in five Yup’ik communities in southwest Alaska, and 2) Presented evidence demonstrating how the model increases strengths and protections against AUD and suicide by promoting culturally meaningful "reasons for sobriety" and "reasons for life." In 2018, one in five high school students and one in 20 middle school students reported that they had “vaped” in the past 30 days, a substantial increase from the previous year. In this webinar, we outline exactly what E-cigarettes are, explore the youth vaping epidemic, and introduce CATCH My Breath as one possible solution. CATCH My Breath is a youth E-cigarette and Juul prevention program developed by the University of Texas Health Science Center. The program provides up-to-date information to teachers, parents, and health professionals to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about the use of E-cigarettes, including JUUL devices. CATCH My Breath uses a peer-led teaching approach and meets national and state health education standards. And best of all, it’s FREE!! Additional Resources Download Webinar Slides Translations     This presentation defines domestic violence (DV) and intimate partner violence (IPV) and provide statistics on the prevalence of DV in the United States. Why do victims of violence stay in this type of relationship? Domestic violence and intimate partner violence do not discriminate between socioeconomic statuses, race, or ethnicity. Domestic violence and intimate partner violence are learned behaviors that are caused by the need for power and control over another person. Victims of DV or IPV may turn to substances to try to cope with the pain, shame and guilt. This only exacerbates the trauma because it may lead to addiction and co-occurring disorders. Learning objectives: Define the types of domestic violence and intimate partner violence Identify causes of domestic violence and intimate partner violence Recognize why a victim of domestic violence or intimate partner violence might turn to addiction Identify ways of coping with trauma Identify ways of finding help Speaker Glory McDaniel, MA, LPCC, LAC, NCC In May of 2018, Glory McDaniel earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Program from Denver Seminary. Mrs. McDaniel is a bilingual therapist working with specific treatment of co-occurring substance use disorders and posttraumatic stress, addiction, and mental illness, leading both English and Spanish groups, educating the community as well as individual counseling. She serves on the board of the Colorado Association of Addiction Professionals (CAAP) and facilitator for Mending the Soul (MTS) groups for women survivors of abuse. Mrs. McDaniel earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services with emphases in Domestic Violence Counseling and Addiction Counseling from the Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2013. She interned with the Center for Trauma and Resilience, formerly known as Denver Center for Crime Victims (DCCV), and later joined the Colorado Organization of Victim Assistance (COVA) as their Human Trafficking Case Manager. Mrs. McDaniel believes in helping others by providing support, counseling, and education on various topics such as domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, anxiety, depression, mental illness, and substance use disorder.  Her ultimate career goal is to establish a nonprofit and start a shelter for women who have/are experiencing abuse and provide them with necessary skills that will empower them to become self-sufficient and live a happy, healthy and prosperous life.

Curriculum Package
The purpose of this introductory training is to provide HIV clinicians (including, but not limited to physicians, dentists, nurses, and other allied medical staff, therapists and social workers, and counselors, specialists, and case managers) with a detailed overview of alcohol abuse and the behavioral and medical approaches for treating individuals with an alcohol use disorder. The introductory training (which was initially developed in 2012) has been updated, and includes a 126-slide PowerPoint presentation, Trainer Guide, and a companion 2-page fact sheet. The duration of the training is approximately 3 hours, if the trainer chooses to present all of the slides. The training duration can be shortened slightly by eliminating select slides. For example, slides 50-58 represent a general introduction of HIV/AIDS, and can be eliminated if your audience already has a broad knowledge base with regards to HIV/AIDS education.  “Test Your Knowledge” questions have been inserted at the beginning and end of the presentation to assess a change in the audience’s level knowledge after the key content has been presented. An answer key is provided in the Trainer’s notes for slides 7-11 and slides 121-125. Poll Everywhere, or a similar audience polling system can be utilized, if available, when facilitating the Test Your Knowledge question sessions. The body of work of peer support programs targeting youth is heavily focused on mental health models involving young adult peer mentors. In Connecticut, for example, some work has taken place involving youth 18-25 with mental illness and/or substance use disorder issues where peers provide support and hope to other young adults with these conditions. In 2017, SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health noted a rise in the lifetime illicit drug use among Latino-Hispanic youth 12-17 and 18-25 from the previous year (2016). For 12 to 17-year old’s the percentage rose from 23.2 percent of youth in 2016 to 24.6 percent of all Latino-Hispanic youth in 2017. Similarly, for 18 to 25-year old’s, the percentage of lifetime used of illicit drugs rose from 51.1 percent in 2016 to 54.7 percent in 2017. It is therefore important to explore the options of addressing these rising rates through peer support models targeting Latino-Hispanic youth and young adults. Moderator: Ivette A.
