Face-to-Face Training
Description:
Opioid overdoses continue to rock neighborhoods, communities and families. As providers, we continue the tireless work that has helped the rates of overdoses to decline yet accept there is still much work ahead. In the interim, how do we respond to the emotional and psychological toll the overdose of a client or resident has on professionals? What are the best ways to support both staff and clients?
This interactive discussion will review some of the main issues that arise when residents in recovery environments experience and don’t survive a recurrence. Content will review the behavioral, physical, and psychological responses to grief, self-care options and coping strategies. Discussion will also review overdose postvention activities that can help support staff and other residents impacted by overdose loss.

Description:
Brief interventions are short counseling sessions that incorporate motivational techniques and strategies to reduce alcohol consumption or other substance use. This interactive workshop reviews simple Motivational Interviewing (MI) strategies for having a person-centered brief conversation that helps evoke change. Using key MI strategies, the content offers practice opportunities to bridge between what we know of MI and what we can actually incorporate in practice.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based collaborative conversational style used to help strengthen an individual's own motivation and commitment to change. In this interactive, skills-based workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn about and practice the spirit and relational skills of MI.
Note: Participants must complete Motivational Interviewing: Relational Skills (Level 1) to be eligible to attend the subsequent training in the MI series: Motivational Interviewing: Technical Skills (Level 2). Those who fully attend Level 1 will automatically receive an invitation to register to attend Level 2.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After completing Motivational Interviewing: Technical Skills (Level 2), participants will:
Define and summarize the processes of focusing and evoking
Identify different strategies for focusing and how to apply them to client interactions

Providing Hep C services—such as screening, testing, treatment, and referrals—presents a valuable opportunity to engage this high-risk population, many of whom are already connected to healthcare. This Hep C training workshop is designed to raise awareness and foster interest in the community-based delivery of Hep C services, as well as enhance knowledge and readiness to adopt Hep C-related practices.

About the trainer
Apoorva Mallya is the Executive Director of the Hepatitis Education Project (HEP) – a nonprofit dedicated to combating viral hepatitis. In this role, he leads the organization’s work to raise awareness, drive supportive policies, educate, and deliver direct services to those at high-risk of viral hepatitis. He works closely with partners to drive towards hepatitis elimination. Previously, Apoorva worked for 15 years at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation focused on polio eradication and strengthening immunization systems. Apoorva worked with Governments and partners enhancing operations and developing innovations to overcome the last challenges and stop polio forever. In addition to an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis, Apoorva has completed graduate certificates in epidemiology and development economics.

The NIATx Change Leader Academy (CLA) is the web-based version of the popular NIATx Change Leader Academy. The CLA has given thousands of behavioral health organizations the tools to make real changes that improve their systems of care. This interactive, expert-led program includes four weekly 90-minute learning sessions. An optional organizational consultation is available following the four sessions. This training and consultation are offered at no cost and are supported by funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Supervision is more than tending to schedules, checking documentation, and reviewing cases. Clinical supervisors are in the unique position to assist clinicians in their ongoing clinical skill development. Adopting the concept of deliberate practice, supervisors can help clinicians implement clinical skills that may lead to better outcomes for the people they serve. These interactive sessions will guide participants in exploring current practices, focusing on skill practice to enhance supervision, and incorporating routine feedback for specific skills. Participants will practice using real- and case-examples to examine managing feedback, difficult situations, and cultural differences.
CEUs will be available for participants who complete the series.
What is an Enhanced Professional Learning Series?
An EPL is an online interactive training and consultation series designed to encourage workplace learning. EPLs use current technologies and instructional/consultation activities to provide real-time skill-based learning and practice through group and self-study activities, reading assignments, and discussions. The main goal of an EPL is to build a community of practice where all participants actively engage with other professionals and consultants.

In this session, Kathleen T. Brady, MD, PhD, of the Medical University of South Carolina, will discuss the NIDA N Clinical Trials Network (CTN) study CTN-0108, “Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for the Treatment of Methamphetamine/Cocaine Use Disorder,” a pilot study that aims to determine the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety for 20 sessions of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) versus sham in adults with a diagnosed methamphetamine or cocaine use disorder.
Dr. Brady, co-Principal Investigator for CTN-0108, will present the rationale for the study, including the literature supporting the use of rTMS in stimulant use disorder, as well as the study methodology and preliminary results.
Objectives:
List 3 key research findings supporting the use of TMS in treating substance use disorders
Describe at least 3 key elements of the methodology for a trial of TMS in treating simulant use disorders
Identify at least 3 preliminary data points from the CTN-0108 study

Dr. Brady is an experienced clinical and translational researcher and has been conducting scientific investigations and clinical work in the field of addictions and psychiatric disorders for over 40 years. Her focus is on pharmacotherapy and neurobiology of addictions, comorbid psychiatric disorders and gender differences in addictions. She has received numerous federal research grants and has published over 400 peer-reviewed journal articles and edited/co-edited 10 books. She is the former Vice President for Research at the Medical University of South Carolina. She has been a member of AAAP for over 25 years and has served at the President of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Use Disorders (AMERSA), the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) and is the immediate past president of International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM).

Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based method for reducing harm and improving outcomes for patients with substance use disorders. This SBIRT training will prepare participants to deliver SBIRT interventions in health care and other settings. In this interactive, instructor-led workshop, you will learn the SBIRT process, practice using SBIRT screening tools, practice administering and interpreting assessments, and understand how to give feedback and make recommendations, including recommendations for treatment.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Define the five categories of use on the substance use continuum
Explain the rationale for universal SBIRT
Understand how to use motivational interviewing to conduct each step of the SBIRT process (screening, brief assessment, and intervention/referral)
Administer SBIRT to adult patients
Discuss how to conduct patient follow-up after initial SBIRT sessions
Describe indications, adverse effects, and dosing for FDA-approved medications for substance use disorders
Delineate common barriers to administering high-quality SBIRT systematically to all patients and how to overcome those barriers
