Native American Summit on Spirituality: Cultural Inclusion into Mental Health Assessments for Native Americans Click the registration button above to register for continuing virtual sessions every other Friday from 2-4pm EDT, 1-3pm CDT, 12-2pm MDT, 11am-1pm PDT, 10am-12pm ADT.  The American Indian and Alaska Native ATTC and MHTTC have invited spiritual leaders from American Indian and Alaska Native communities to come together to discuss the importance of spirituality in the treatment of behavioral health and mental health disorders. Spirituality is often left out of counseling and therapeutic relationships, but is an essential part of healing and change for many clients.  Behavioral health, mental health, and addiction treatment professionals, spiritual leaders, social workers, and other health service professionals are welcome to attend this important discussion on methods for integrating spirituality into their work with clients.

When working with Hispanic and Latino populations, clear language should never be a linear process, particularly for a collectivist society that defines and interprets experiences, environment, and even words used within a cultural context.  Latino values such as, ‘machismo and personalismo,’ have their own connotations, and can be insightful. But when they are singularly defined and understood through an American perspective, we wonder why we feel a ‘disconnect’ with the Hispanic client/patient we’re tasked to provide services to.  This interactive 90-minute webinar will inform on research identified Hispanic and Latino cultural values and how they translate in communication for individuals with substance use and/or mental health problems. The content will also include strategies to support, “recuperación,” (recovery), for members of these communities. Contingency management (CM) is an effective behavioral intervention that provides tangible reinforcement when target behaviors are completed and objectively verified. A large body of literature supports CM’s use for the treatment of persons with substance use disorders (SUDs). Many applications of CM in treating SUDs focus on abstinence, providing monetary rewards or prizes when clients provide objective evidence of abstinence from drugs (e.g., urine samples). Contingency management has also been adapted successfully to reinforce other behaviors, including treatment attendance, medication adherence, and treatment-related activities (e.g., submitting job applications, attending medical appointments). Despite this strong empirical foundation, CM has only been widely disseminated within large self-contained healthcare systems (e.g., Veterans Affairs).  This workshop will review the application of CM to promote positive behavior change in substance use disorder treatment settings.  Attendees will learn how to design and implement an effective CM program. Specifically, 1) the theoretical underpinnings and supporting empirical literature, 2) different types of CM programs (i.e., voucher, prize), 3) effective design features, 4) most common deviations from evidence-based protocols and how to avoid them, 5) common barriers, 6) how to calculate costs of delivering CM incentives themselves and 7) strategies for designing your own protocol.  [This is a closed event]

Join CABHP for Ethics in the Workplace and Cultural Intelligence Training in the Westward Ho at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus! Ethics in the Workplace will be held from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Cultural Intelligence will be held from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. You may register for either the Ethics Training ($59), the Cultural Intelligence Training ($59) or both trainings for a discounted price of $109. This course provides participants with an overview of the moral concepts of goodness, right, and obligation, and the ways in which they operate in the workplace. These concepts are further enhanced during the classroom discussions and group work. Additionally, this course is designed to provide participants with Cultural Intelligence, or CQ, which is defined by the Harvard Business Review as the ability to make sense of unfamiliar contexts and then blend in. There are four main core components to this concept; cognitive, physical, and emotional, and motivational. This is the final session of the Mobile Apps as Clinician Extenders in SUD Treatment and Recovery learning community. The goal of this learning community is to increase the use of mobile apps as recovery care extenders in substance use treatment and recovery services.
