This training focused on how to conduct screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) for alcohol and other illicit drug use. Attendees gained knowledge and skills in assessment, screening, brief interventions, and referral to treatment for substance use disorders. Such skills are expected to improve HIV outcomes through increased detection and intervention of co-occurring and drug use disorders.

The NIATx Change Leader Academy is a one-day face-to-face workshop followed by three months of peer networking and support from a NIATx coach.  The CLA trains change leaders in the NIATx model of process improvement: a structured, team-based approach to change management for organizations large and small. In this interactive training session, attendees will learn the four essential NIATx tools and develop a clear plan for a change project.   Hosted by the Great Lakes ATTC and the Minnesota Association of Resources for Recovery and Chemical Health (MARRCH). Texting is widely used to remind people of health appointments and to improve medical compliance. There is research evidence that text messages can improve substance abuse treatment outcomes as well. This two-part online training will describe best practices for developing and sending automated text messages to support substance abuse treatment. It will provide evidence for the effectiveness of text reminders and tips, show a basic strategy for organizing and sending batch text messages, give suggestions for developing message content, and demonstrate how to develop an automated texting sequence using a text message service provider. Part I will show participants how to develop and send automated text messages to groups of people. Participants will be encouraged to develop their own series of text messages. (April 1, 2019) Part II will allow participants to share their work with others, to receive feedback, and to troubleshoot any difficulties. Participants will have the option of subscribing to a text message sequence that will give suggestions and tips to accompany the series. (April 15, 2019) Learning Objectives:  At the end of the series, participants will be able to •    Recall ways that text messages have been used to improve substance use treatment outcomes. •    Describe “best practices” for message tone and framing. •    Understand how to use a text message provider to develop and send text messages.  •    Develop a plan for using text messages to support treatment concepts and flow.       Presenter:  Scott T. Walters, Ph.D., is Regents Professor and Chair of Health Behavior and Health Systems at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. His research focuses on using motivational interviewing and technology as behavioral health interventions.

A CPSS / Recovery Coach is anyone interested in promoting recovery by removing barriers and obstacles to recovery and serving as a personal guide and mentor for people seeking or maintaining recovery. The training will provide participants with a comprehensive overview of the purpose and tasks of a CPSS / Recovery Coach and will explain the various roles associated with a CPSS / Recovery Coach. The training will provide participants with tools and resources useful in providing recovery support services.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence based practice developed and refined to build intrinsic motivation about behavior change. MI is a ‘client-centered conversation’ focused on the exploration and resolution of ‘ambivalence’ about a collaboratively defined ‘change goal’. This interactive training defines and demonstrates the essential components necessary for ‘intentional’ practice: MI Spirit, the Four Processes and the core skills; represented by the acronym OARS. Learners will engage in practice opportunities and observe demonstrations of effective and ineffective practice.

This course takes the learner on a tour of the essential skills used to strengthen an individual’s motivation for behavior change.

Supporting Recovery with Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) is a 3-hour, self-paced course designed to enhance your professional knowledge of MAT and to build skills related to reaching and educating clients about MAT. At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to: demonstrate how to use MAT with alcohol and opioid dependent clients; describe the various medications approved to treat alcohol and opioid dependence, including research outcomes, and extent of use; identify the workforce, organizational, and environmental/regulatory issues that facilitate or impede the implementation of MAT; and model ways to overcome barriers to clients’ use of MAT and build awareness of MAT among clients, their friends and family, and the general community.
