DESCRIPTION It’s not always easy to get clients to actively participate in substance abuse groups, particularly if they’ve been mandated to enter treatment. Clients often come to group with their defenses up. Group leaders must know how to create an environment in which group members feel safe enough to lower their defenses and begin to share authentically. Our first task as group leaders must be to help group members connect with each other and find commonalities so that they can take the risk to be vulnerable. We are gearing this workshop towards working with substance abuse groups but these techniques are useful in all groups. The participants will learn the therapeutic value of Sociometric Exploration in Substance Abuse Treatment groups, experiential structures to uncover commonalities among members, and practice tools to get clients talking to each other so that they can connect. OBJECTIVES   Participants will be able to: Explain the therapeutic value of sociometry. Describe two sociometric techniques to engage and warm up the group. Describe the importance of utilizing action-based techniques that will assist clients in engaging more fully in the treatment process, the steps to uncovering commonalities among group members to create safety and build group cohesion, and the sociometric structures to get group members engaged in the group. **SPECIAL NOTE** Though this training is not mandatory, space is very limited. This training is very interactive and various activities will be conducted. Use of your video camera will be required throughout the entire training. If you believe you will be unable to make this commitment, please allow someone the opportunity to register. In the event that you register and later learn that you will no longer be able to participate, please let us know as soon as possible. This training is approved for CARC/CRPA hours in addition to OASAS-approved hours. Research suggests that race and ethnicity are predictors of how services are delivered, and implicit bias is one component that has been identified as influencing the provision of poor care. The elusiveness of unconscious bias underscores provider perception, unwitting use of stigmatic language, and influences assumptions and microaggressions affecting a person's capacity to respond to care. This interactive two-hour training will discuss how cognitive bias develops, is sustained by intrinsic and environmental factors, and contributes to inequitable outcomes for persons of color. The content will also inform on bias reducing techniques and person-first language approaches that can enhance provider-client interactions and outcomes for marginalized communities. CREDITS: This training meets approval for 2 renewal hours (CASAC, CPP, CPS) and 2 initial hours (CPP, CPS) through New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS). When working with Hispanic and Latino populations, clear language should never be a linear process, particularly for a collectivist society that defines and interprets experiences within a cultural context. Latino values such as "machismo" and "personalismo" can be very insightful, but when defined and understood through an American perspective, we wonder why we feel a "disconnect" with the Hispanic client/patient we need to provide behavioral health services to. This interactive presentation will inform on Latino cultural nuances that can reframe communication for Hispanic individuals with substance use and/or mental health problems and discuss prevention strategies to support “recuperación” (recovery). CREDITS: This training meets the requirements for three renewal hours (CASAC, CPP, CPS) and three initial hours (CPP, CPS) through New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS). Webinar/Virtual Training
DESCRIPTION A Liberation-focused practice seeks to meet marginalized people where they are, within their cultural, historical, and community contexts, and to support clients in healing from the impacts of white supremacy, homophobia, gender binary rigidity, and other systems of dominance and oppression. We know that substance over-use is a common tool used by marginalized community members to find relief from the continual soul-scraping of living with degrading experiences, microaggressions, exploitation, intergenerational trauma, and colonial legacies. Effective liberation prevention and treatment approaches are those that pull back from individual choices and focus on the underlying systems that create intolerable conditions for living. These frameworks engage structural and institutional analysis, including a critical look at the ways behavioral health care systems may act as a tool to reinforce systemic inequity, and offer community-nested, strengths-based, empowerment-focused healing approaches. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Locate substance use as an adaptive tool for managing minority stress. Apply a liberation framework to creative outreach strategies and prevention messaging. Examine the role of behavioral health providers and systems in maintaining oppressive care structures and apply new models to substance use treatment. Develop a liberation framework analysis of current treatment options available to BIPOC LGBTQ people. PRESENTER Randall Leonard, LCSW-C, is a licensed clinical social worker who has specialized in the care of LGBTQ individuals for four years. They currently serve as a Staff Therapist at the Center for LGBTQ Health Equity, a Center of Excellence of Chase Brexton Health Care, providing individual therapy as well as assessments for gender-affirming surgery. They also facilitate “Identity Talk”, a group for trans and gender-diverse people of color to process intersectionality between culture and gender. Before joining the Chase Brexton team, Randall served survivors of intimate partner violence at Family and Children’s Services, where they provided individual therapy and a weekly support group. In addition, they worked as a Behavioral Specialist in the Emergency Department of Union Memorial Hospital. They started their social work career working with people with severe and persistent mental illness at Sheppard Pratt Health Systems. Randall holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work with a concentration in clinical behavioral health. *CONTACT HOUR ELIGIBILITY In order to be eligible for the 1.75 contact hours/certificate of attendance, you must join the live webinar in the Zoom platform. Webinar/Virtual Training
Over the past 20 years, a growing understanding of the pervasive and harmful impact of traumatic events on individuals, families, and communities has led to the emergence of research on the effects of trauma and treatment strategies to address mental health and substance use disorders. According to SAMSHA, trauma is a widespread, harmful, and costly public health problem, occurring because of violence, abuse, neglect, loss, disaster, war, and other emotionally harmful experiences. While many people who experience a traumatic event do not have lasting negative effects, others experience more difficulty with traumatic stress reactions. Research has documented the relationship between exposure to traumatic events and substance abuse. For example, approximately 20%-90% of individuals with a substance use disorder (SUD) have a history of childhood trauma and 37% to 52% have a posttraumatic stress disorder diagnosis (Mergler et al, 2018). When it comes to trauma, there are no boundaries regarding age, gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, geography, or sexual orientation.   This online learning series will increase the skill level of behavioral health professionals to define and recognize trauma in individuals. Helping individuals affected by trauma to manage their symptoms using a strength-based approach minimizes re-traumatization and enhances practitioners’ ability to provide trauma-informed support.   Registration for this series is closed.
