DESCRIPTION In response to the Opioid epidemic, the Central East ATTC partnered with the DC Family Success Centers to build capacity for their provider network to implement evidenced-based screening tools, provide targeted counseling and when appropriate, refer patients to treatment using SBIRT. SBIRT is an evidence-based intervention used to help Screen, provide a Brief Intervention and Refer appropriate patients for Treatment related to substance use disorders. Through T/TA, Central East will worked with DC Family Success Center members to enhance their understanding, knowledge and skills in the implementation of SBIRT, meeting over a several month period. The goal of the project will be to support agency staff in the development of a realistic Implementation Work Plan. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Provide orientation to the Central East ATTC and our role commitment to workforce development Describe the partnership between that PACHC and the Central East ATTC Provide a basic understanding of SBIRT and its implementation in health care settings Describe the purpose and structure of the Intensive Technical Assistance project, including time investment and timeline Answer questions surrounding participation WHO SHOULD ATTEND DC Family Success Centers who have been chosen for the project and have been sent an invite. She is a Licensed Bachelor Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Board-Certified Coach, Master Addiction Counselor, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and Certified Grief Counseling Specialist. Ms. Connors is Certified in Thanatology [the study of death, dying, and bereavement]. She has been in the human services/social work/counseling fields for 30 years and has worked in a variety of settings providing services to the despondent and downtrodden. Ms. Connors works tirelessly to help others reach their fullest potential in life, supporting and empowering those who have been oppressed, stigmatized, marginalized, and victimized. Her greatest passion is working with, serving, and providing training related to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, substance use and mental health disorders, violence/abuse/trauma, grief and loss, racial and social injustices. Ms. Connors is a mental health therapist providing services to individuals who have co-occurring issues. In addition to her pastoral and clinical work, Ms. Connors is a college professor. She has taught at the University of Maryland and is currently teaching at Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland. Like many women of color, Ms. Connors has experienced various forms of oppression.

Recent data suggests that colorectal cancer rates are higher in African Americans over 50, compared to the general population, and is increasing among younger community. Research also indicates that Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is effective in using a public health approach in identifying persons with at-risk behavior for various psychosocial and potentially debilitating health conditions including colorectal cancer.   This interactive (role plays, videos, large group activities) training will review evidence-based health screening tools, and considerations for culturally framing screening in communities of color. Content will also include skills practice focused on the brief intervention, and components of successful facilitation of referrals to treatment with be discussed.
