J. Paul Seale, MD, Certified by the American Boards of Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine, discusses America’s ongoing opioid epidemic. By the end of this one hour program, participants should be able to: 1) identify several key developments in the origin of the opioid epidemic, 2) describe strategic initiatives that are in progress to address the epidemic, and 3) identify specific steps forward that could help address the epidemic.

This webinar defines harm reduction as it is implemented on the policy, population, community and individual levels, discusses its historical roots, and provides a rationale for harm-reduction treatment as a policy and clinical practice to address the opioid epidemic. Informed by the Region 8 Needs Assessment three priority areas have been used to inform Year 1 training and technical assistance events to date. For example, Enhanced Professional Learning Series (EPLS) on SBIRT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Skill-based Videoconferencing (SbVC), and Technology-Based Clinical Supervision (TBCS) have been conducted throughout the Region. In this webinar, Dr. Dennis Donovan, PhD, of the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute, University of Washington, describes the Healing of the Canoe (HOC) project, a collaborative between the Suquamish Tribe, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe (PGST), and the University of Washington Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute (ADAI) to plan, implement, and evaluate culturally grounded interventions to reduce health disparities and promote health with both Native American tribes. In this webinar, Steve Woolworth, PhD, Vice President of Treatment and Reentry Services at Pioneer Human Services, shared a brief history of Pioneer Human Services (PHS), one of the nation’s largest social enterprise organizations, accompanied by a summary of the organization’s current service model and the emerging practices that PHS is investing in to address social determinants of health and the criminogenic and clinical risk factors associated with criminal justice recidivism, chronic addiction, and homelessness.  

Learn through example by watching any or all of six vignettes which illustrate how, through MI, practitioners can help their patients develop intrinsic motivation to be tested for HCV and to feel positive about making a responsible health decision. Each unique scenario features a trained motivational interviewer speaking with a patient at risk for hepatitis C. The videos portray a diverse group of backgrounds and life experiences.

A Tour of Motivational Interviewing: An Interprofessional Road Map for Behavior Change is a four-hour course in Motivational Interviewing (MI), a form of collaborative conversation for strengthening a person's own motivation and commitment to change, by eliciting and exploring the person's own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. This course takes the learner on a tour of the essential skills used to strengthen an individual’s motivation for behavior change. This online course was prepared by the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Nursing and Health Studies’ Mid-America Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Mid-America ATTC), under a cooperative agreement from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

An educational product designed for all members of a multidisciplinary team in a treatment and recovery services setting for people with substance use disorders. It has four modules with general topics: Competences, Theoretical models, Professional ethics, and Neurobiology. These modules provide basic and essential information on each of the topics and are presented in a video format where images and text are accompanied by a narrative of the content.

This 90-minute, self-paced course is designed to briefly familiarize medical and behavioral health professionals with hepatitis C virus (HCV), specifically: 1) populations at risk; 2) hepatitis C, the disease; 3) screening processes; and 4) treatment options.
