The Great Lakes A/MH/PTTC is offering this training for individuals working in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, WI. This training is being provided in response to a need identified by Region 5 stakeholders.   Alcohol is STILL a Drug: An Exploratory Webinar Series (May 3, 2022) Recording     DESCRIPTION  Alcohol is STILL a drug.  The opioid crisis, increase in stimulant misuse, and marijuana legalization dominate the news— yet alcohol remains the number one substance causing health, social, legal and financial problems throughout the US. While this series will focus on the hopefulness of recovery from alcohol use disorder, we’ll also take a deep dive into what we know about the full impact of alcohol overuse and the ways it affects every person in the US.     SPEAKER Gabriela Zapata-Alma, LCSW, CADC Gabriela Zapata-Alma, LCSW, CADC, is the Associate Director at the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health, as well as a lecturer at the University of Chicago, where they direct the Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor Training Program. Gabriela brings over 15 years of experience supporting people impacted by structural and interpersonal violence and their traumatic effects through evidence-based clinical, housing, resource advocacy, and HIV-specific integrated care programs. Currently, Gabriela authors best practices, leads national capacity-building efforts, and provides trauma-informed policy consultation to advance health equity and social justice.     SERIES LEARNING OBJECTIVES These are the overall learning objectives for the full 10-session series:  Summarize the current impacts of problematic alcohol use in various/special populations, including pregnant women, youth, rural, and minority populations.  Assess and prioritize alcohol reduction efforts in targeted settings.  Describe the current efforts to curb problematic alcohol use, including best practices in providing treatment. 

Alaska presents a unique challenge for access to harm reduction services; prior to 2016 only 3 urban SAPs serviced the state, which includes over 200 tribal villages spread over 650,000 square miles. Since then, innovative strategies such as a local volunteer run syringe access program (SAP) in Homer, a SAP at a rural tribal medical clinic in Bethel, and a mail order tribal harm reduction program out of Anchorage, have greatly expanded access to services throughout the state. Additionally, rural medical clinics offer a critical access point for patients who use drugs to access medications and services to reduce risks and improve their health. This webinar reviewed the barriers to accessing harm reduction services in rural areas, and the strengths and opportunities rural communities have to offer in the development of new harm reduction programs. The New England ATTC co-hosted the Recovery Science and Harm Reduction (RSHR) Reading Group meeting on April 28, 2022 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, cannabis use rates increased in 2020, with almost 50 million individuals 12 or older reporting use of cannabis in the past year. She will share ways to engage in cultural celebrations and activities while maintaining safe alcohol usage.      TRAINER Yengyee Lor, President–Faithful Consulting Yengyee is a trainer, leadership coach, and organizational consultant helping organizations strategically deliver meaningful organizational impact that is holistic, sustainable, and profitable. She is s a certified PCC coach, certified non-profit consultant, workforce planning strategist, and keynote speaker. Yengyee has degrees in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Counseling, and Social Work.    

The module 'A Broad Look at Emotional Trauma' stems from IRESA's (Institute of Research, Education and Services in Addiction) commitment to provide training to mental health service providers. This pocket guide is intended as a tool for mental health providers as they offer services to individuals, communities, and agencies working with people who have experienced traumatic events. Some of the concepts described, such as resilience, retraumatization, ethno-racial trauma, and the study of Adverse Childhood Experiences and trauma-informed services, are basic elements to take into consideration when offering trauma-focused services. The objective of this pocket guide is to:   Define trauma and related terms. Identify the impact of untreated trauma on human development. Recognize the signs of emotional trauma. Identify courses of action and management of traumatic experiences. Explain the importance of a trauma-informed system and how to support resiliency and recovery. Provide self-care practices to avoid vicarious trauma.

Recording of TOR Webinar: Using TOR Funding to Improve Data Collection. Will Longinetti and Jared Stokes from SAMHSA will present information on available federal data on the opioid crisis and identify gaps in that data, and a TOR grantee will share details of their data collection project.

Before starting a D/E/I development consulting firm, Jovan worked 2 years as a Vice President of Operations for the largest privately held Home Health Organization. Before joining corporate America, Jovan was an Air Force Academy graduate and officer in the United States Air Force. Upon a successful start to his career in the Air Force and aerospace engineering, Jovan began facilitating courageous conversations on race equity.  After attending Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management for his MBA, Jovan has found ways to add value as a transformational leader in both D/E/I, and as an executive operational specialist. Cultural Competence is a life-long process requiring personal awareness, education, sharing of power and intentional actions to extend social justice and equity to all. This interactive training invites learners to reflect on their cultural identities, history, and experiences, and to actively consider how each of these elements can impact outcomes with clients. Participants were engaged in individual, small and large group activities focused on Anti-Oppression and Anti-Racist outcomes.
