Introduction to the DSM-5 & Models of Substance Use

This first course will introduce participants to the DSM-5 and also present models of substance use (moral, disease, bio-psycho-social-spiritual).  Also, many people are not aware of how the DSM-5 addresses culture.  This course will review the Cultural Formation Interview contained in the DSM-5.
 

Goal:  Introduce participants to the DSM-5 and examine substance use as a disorder

Objectives:

  1. Define the purpose of the DSM-5
  2. List criteria for a substance use disorder
  3. Describe 3 models of substance use:  moral, disease, bio-psycho-social-spiritual
  4. Describe 3 reasons culture is important to a diagnosis
  5. List 4 questions from the cultural formation interview
